TDP’s Tryst With Trust Vote in AP Assembly Sessions

The main Opposition, Telugu Desam Party, in the Assembly is unlikely to move a no-confidence motion against the N Kiran Kumar Reddy-led Congress Government, as its leader N Chandrababu Naidu is understood to have decided against attending the budget session of the State Assembly beginning on March 11.

If the main Opposition decides against tabling no-confidence motion, the onus will move on to the YSR Congress, which is the second largest opposition party after Telugu Desam in the House, to take a decision on the issue. Also, the YSR Congress is hankering for the no-trust move.

Naidu, who chaired the Telugu Desam Legislature Party meeting at Dakaram village in Krishna district on Thursday, reportedly expressed the view that he wanted to continue his Vastunna Mee Kosam padayatra and nominated party’s senior leader Mothkupalli Narasimhulu to officiate as party’s leader in the Assembly in his absence.

Except between 1983 and 1989 when he was not a member, Naidu always attended the Assembly sessions without fail. However, he directed all his party members to invariably attend the meeting and fight for the people’s problems.

The demand for moving a no-confidence motion has been going on for many months from the YSR Congress leaders as Naidu has been breathing fire at the very mention of the Congress government accusing the Congress leaders of indulging in large scale corruption and not bothered about people’s problems.

He even ridiculed the demand for moving no-confidence motion saying that it would result in poaching by other parties but the real reason is that his party is not prepared to face elections if the government collapses after losing the trust vote. Therefore, he wants to wait until he completed his padayatra to assess the people’s mood and the situation.

Naidu is also reportedly of the view that any break in the padayatra means allowing YSR Congress leader Y S Sharmila overtake him as she is also on a marathon padayatra and is currently touring in the neighbouring Guntur district.

By making Narsimhulu as party leader in his absence, Naidu has pacified him as the Dalit leader has been sulking for the last two months after he was not given due importance in the padayatra in his native Nalgonda district.

According to sources, Naidu was annoyed as only 45 MLAs and 9 MLCs attended the meeting and made it clear that they have to change their mindset and work for the party and people.

Speaking to reporters, Narsimhulu said that the Telugu Desam would corner the state government on people’s issues but did not commit itself on moving a no confidence motion during the session.
“We will not oblige other parties which are asking us to move the motion a no-trust vote for their vested interests. We are aware about the subject and will take a right decision at the right time,” he said while rejecting the YSRC’s demand.

Issues like irregularities in crop loan wavier scheme, Babli project, drinking water scarcity, short supply of power, weavers’ problems and other topics, will be raised in the Assembly, he said. Naidu listed out a dozen issues for them to highlight and participate in the debates to discuss the people’s problems.

The TDP is likely to demand an inquiry into the assets of ‘Brother’ Anil Kumar, husband of YS Sharmila.
