Breaking Bread: Reinventing The 'Naan' And 'New Making'

By Ruchi Mehta
Group Feature Editor
Subject to the capricious whims of the nation's palate, the naan was in danger of fading into the background. The last few years, though, have seen considerable reinvention and a grand revival.

It is a rare north Indian meal that can fly solo without the comforting presence of a hot naan, fresh off the tandoor. But while we may have embraced the teardrop-shaped flatbread, it is not Indian in origin. No matter, because, much like some versions of biryani and even kebabs, the naan that we eat can arguably be considered India’s gift to the culinary world.

Archaeologists believe that the leavened bread could have been a part of the subcontinent’s diet during the Indus Valley Civilisation (3,300-1,300 BCE) because of the discovery of earthen pots and pans. But one of the earliest written references to the naan appears only centuries later, in 1300 AD, in the notes of Indo-Persian Sufi poet Amir Khusrow.

Operation Jai Mata Di: A 'Terror Tale' With A Perfect Twist

BOOK REVIEW: "The weapons recovery team has reported fifteen crates of small calibre weapons missing from the army truck hit by the landslide at Pir Panjal," a message that sends a shiver down the spine of director general of Border Security Force.

While Pratik Shah's Operation Jai Mata Di may seem to be a run-of-the-mill plot where terrorists take innocent people hostage, it is because of books like these that inspire the saying 'don't judge a book by its cover'.

In this nail biter of a book, over 10,000 pilgrims are en route to the holy shrine of Vaishno Devi, a religious tourist destination in the troubled state of Jammu & Kashmir, when they're taken hostage but no terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack because here the so-called 'terrorists' are different both in terms of nationality and their mission.

The Inside Story Of Pakistani Pigeon Spy Arrested In India

Last week, Indian authorities “arrested” a pigeon on charges of spying for Pakistan. The bird was spotted by a teenage boy in an Indian village close to the border. Since it had a message written in Urdu on its feathers, the pigeon was detained by the police and X-rayed. While nothing suspicious turned up, the bird was reportedly registered as a “suspected spy” in police logs.

From Pakistan, here’s a caricature of what was truly a ridiculous episode of law enforcement.

Last week, border tensions between two South Asian countries flared up once again as a Pakistani spy pigeon was apprehended in Indian territory. Police immediately sent the avian agent to a polyclinic.

Social Discrimination: How Bias Against Muslim Flat Seekers Came To Be Entrenched In Mumbai City?

In Indian cities which was a symbol of democratic and secular culture, now becoming a hub of social discriminiation. Mumbai witnessed a row of incidents, first the refusal of job being a muslim and now, denial of flat to a muslim girl.

Public relations professional Misbah Quadri, 25, uncovered Mumbai’s worst-kept secret of two decades when she approached the National Human Rights Commission this week with a complaint that she had been forced to vacate a legitimately leased apartment because she is Muslim. It certainly isn’t the first case of its kind in the place that is usually touted as India’s most cosmopolitan metropolis.

Indo-Pak Taste: The Explosive Case For 'Mango' Diplomacy

A debate on comparison of Mango of India and Pakistan makes it diplomatic move. The information flow of two countries on Mango fruit makes this debate more interesting.

I am telling nothing but the truth when I tell you that Indian mangoes are better than Pakistani mangoes. It infuriates me when Pakistanis don't agree. That makes mangoes an India-Pakistan dispute just like Kashmir. Like a good Indian, I don't think this needs a referendum. Of course our mangoes are better. How could anyone even think that isn't the case?

Exposed: The 'Big Lie' On The 'Killing of Osama Bin Laden'

Osama bin Laden’s death at the hands of US Navy SEALs was nothing at all like the official accounts given by the United States government and military, according to a controversial article in the London Review of Books by veteran investigative journalist Seymour M. Hersh.

Rather than hiding in Pakistan, bin Laden was a prisoner of the Pakistani military, who not only knew of his location, but were keeping him under house arrest and accepting funds from Saudi Arabia for his upkeep.

Focus: How 'Modi Sarkar' Let Down India In Just One Year?

Politics is more about perception than performance. As Narendra Modi completes his first year in office this month, the scrutiny of his performance by both critics and admirers has breached the thermal limit. Since he conquered the harried heart of the scam-stung voter, expectations were frighteningly vertiginous.

Today is the exam day, many awaited to see the 'cow student' how she will write the exam, but the cow didn't turn up.

India's Water Woes: 'Hydropolitics' Is 'Reason For Crisis'

With looming water wars in South Asia, India cannot afford to be casual about harnessing and utilising its water resource, particularly when China is behaving like a hydraulic empire.

Water has the same popular appeal as justice, freedom, equality, representation and power. There is also something elemental or inherently wicked about water because searching for solutions to manage and cope with water issues creates a set of different problems that are political, emotive and divisive.

Divisive Or Democratic? The Rise Of Owaisi's Majlis Party!

Parties like Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen, headed by its increasingly popular leader Asaduddin Owaisi, can serve an important function in giving democratic voice to minority concerns and frustrations.

The All India Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), a Muslim oriented political party, recently won two seats in the Maharashtra state legislature in India attracting revulsion from both Hindu nationalist and secular parties. Contrary to the fears raised by its critics the party’s electoral success can actually be good for the country’s democracy.

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan suddenly stopped all film projects till the verdict of his legal cases and its consequenses. According to sources, all the new films, commercials and other endorsements have been stopped by the actor.

Salman Khan is a top draw at the box office, so it’s no surprise that he always has a number of film offers lined up. But even as the two projects he has in hand — Bajrangi Bhaijaan (BB) and Sooraj Barjatya’s next Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo — near completion, there is no news regarding what he will work on next.

My Column: Have We Pushed Nature To Unleash Its Fury?

Delicate, sensitive yet all enduring and reliable, we have really pushed the earth's tolerance to a limit where it may no longer be able to bear the weight of the human race.

Over the course of my lifetime, I have travelled to several countries and cities, visited five continents and crossed the International Date Line and the equator. So what have I seen and noticed?

During most of these visits, I was a part of some delegation or the other, so my views were often based on snippets seen on the side of the show. Clearly, citizens of some countries are well off and some badly off.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's flagship programme to clean India through specialised Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) may be doomed even before its proper take-off, due to lack of clarity in guidelines and inadequate funding.

In a presentation before the parliamentary panel that scrutinised grants for ministry of drinking water and sanitation, secretary Vijaylaxmi Joshi, not only lamented the inadequate budget, but also lack of clarity on funding pattern and guidelines of 'Swachh Bharat Kosh'.

Opinion: Why The Police Is Now Target In Kashmir Valley?

A sudden spurt in attacks by militants in Kashmir has raised eye brows in the security grid. However, many believe that it was on expected lines as militancy is not completely out, though surely on the decline.

Last week militants registered their presence by attacking three places in a single day. The major attack took place in South Kashmir’s Shopian district where three policemen were killed in an ambush.

What made these attacks different was that in two cases they targeted policemen and in the third one a former militant was shot at. Given the history of militant presence in Kashmir, these attacks are not unusual.

India’s Forgotten Refugees: After 70 Years Partition Of The India, Still Hindus Who Live In Abject Poverty In Kashmir Are Not Even Allowed To Vote Or Use Basic Facilities

Around 100,000 people living in Jammu and Kashmir are classified as 'West Pakistan Refugees' (WPR) in India, and don't have the right to vote or own property. Successive governments have not acted to change their status, meaning three generations of the Hindu community are trapped in poverty.

But after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu Nationalist party (BJP) won a won a share of power in India's only Muslim-majority state, the refugees have reason to be hopeful.
