Becoming Endangered: Are 'Bananas' Facing Extinction?

Bananas as you know them are indeed under great threat, but the bananas you eat today are merely the latest strain of the fruit and the notion that it would become totally extinct is fanciful. But there is a reason why the rumour started.

In 2003 The New Scientist claimed bananas could be extinct in a decade due to the leaf disease Black Sigatoka as well as Panama Disease, caused by a soil fungus that attacks the roots of the plant. The article may seem alarmist, given that we’d have to lose all bananas within the next two years for it to be true, but it shouldn’t be ignored. After all, the Panama disease has struck in a big way before.

Although parents generally see picky eating among children as just a phase, a new study says those with both moderate and severe selective eating may be at increased risk for depression and anxiety. More than 20 percent of children aged two to six are selective eaters, the study said.

"The children we are talking about are not just misbehaving kids who refuse to eat their broccoli," said lead author Nancy Zucker from Duke University School of Medicine in the US. "These are children whose eating has become so limited or selective that it's starting to cause problems," Zucker said.

The ones who are studying there for the last two years were assured that they will be allowed to complete their degree. But with no approval, the students are worried that they will not be able to complete the mandatory 5,000 hours of practicals in hospitals, which they need to start right away.
