Review: TV Serial 'Reporters' On Sony TV Making Waves

By Nishi Khan in Mumbai
Indian television has always struggled with content, especially when it comes to daily shows. This has been the principle reason it was imperative to wait for Sony's 'Reporters' to cross the 50 episode mark to review it. The content has been engrossing and the pace, delightful right from the beginning but the real challenge was to sustain both of these over a period of time.

The show proved it was indeed possible as it completed half century last week on a high note. Not only has the pace been maintained but the content has been consistently evolving. The script and screenplay seem tightly knitted together with no scope for any squeezing- in of a redundant scene whatsoever.

Expert Doctors With Disability: Surgical Jobs Still Denied

By Atif Alam

HUMAN INTEREST: Though students with locomotor disability can study surgical disciplines, they're not considered for vacancies.

If the health ministry and the Medical Council of India (MCI) had had their way , Dr Suresh H Advani, the haemato-oncologist who performed the first successful bone marrow transplant in India, would never have become a doctor. Advani's legs were afflicted by polio and he uses a wheelchair. By the health ministry's classification, he would be certified as being more than 70% disabled and hence not fit to study medicine.

For decades, policy makers, mostly `nondisabled', have decided what persons with disabilities are capable of. That is why, a double amputee or even a mid-thigh amputee, who would be classified as having 85% or more of locomotor disability, would not be allowed to study medicine.

Background verification agencies have their hands full with false addresses, phony employment letters and inflated salary slips.

An Air India pilot suspended recently for producing a bo gus Class 12 certificate, Goa minister Sudin Dhavalikar's graduate degree being questioned, and former Delhi law minister Jitender Singh Tomar's arrest in an alleged fake degree case... these aren't isolated cases.

According to a new report by HireRight, a US-based provider of employment background checks, 23% of more than 2 lakh inspections done in India from January 2014 to April 2015 yielded discrepancies.

“There are thousands of fake universities and bogus institutes in India. This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to forgery,“ says Kamesh Kiran, who heads IBC India, a verification company in Bengaluru which handles 7,000 checks a month for IT, pharma and construction companies. They spot a 30% discrepancy in educational qualifications.

The 'Grave' Problem: No Land For 'Dead' In Crowded Cities

By Syed Mohammed in Hyderabad
INDIA CONCERN: Pointing to the irony of fate, noted poet Khumar Barabankvi wrote: 'Do gaz zameen mil hii gayi mujh gareeb ko, Marne ke baad main bhi zamindar ho gaya'. The loose translation turns out as, “Two square yards of land at last this pauper has found It is after my death that I too have become a landlord."

The couplet is a dark commentary of how the landless become landlords, but, only when they are buried in the dank grave. But while this may have been true many years ago, the grave reality is quite different now. It appears that very soon, the two square yards of land which Barabankvi, and also Bahadur Shah Zafar spoke of, will not be available unless things change fast. There is undoubtedly shrinkage of grave space in the city.
