“My Father Would Beat Me, But My Mother Will Do Worse”

The Ministry of Women and Child Development released a study that laid out India’s struggles with child abuse in stark terms. “Child abuse is shrouded in secrecy and there is a conspiracy of silence around the entire subject,” the report, called ‘Study on Child Abuse’, reads. “Further, certain kinds of traditional practices that are accepted across the country, knowingly or un-knowingly amount to child abuse.”

While there are many stories that revolve around this secrecy, the future for abused children is bleak; however, it is not impossible with the existence of initiatives like Childline India Foundation, which functions as a national organization for awareness, advocacy and training on issues of child abuse.

Breaking Bread: Reinventing The 'Naan' And 'New Making'

By Ruchi Mehta

Subject to the capricious whims of the nation's palate, the naan was in danger of fading into the background. The last few years, though, have seen considerable reinvention and a grand revival.

It is a rare north Indian meal that can fly solo without the comforting presence of a hot naan, fresh off the tandoor. But while we may have embraced the teardrop-shaped flatbread, it is not Indian in origin. No matter, because, much like some versions of biryani and even kebabs, the naan that we eat can arguably be considered India’s gift to the culinary world.

Archaeologists believe that the leavened bread could have been a part of the subcontinent’s diet during the Indus Valley Civilisation (3,300-1,300 BCE) because of the discovery of earthen pots and pans. But one of the earliest written references to the naan appears only centuries later, in 1300 AD, in the notes of Indo-Persian Sufi poet Amir Khusrow.

What Wrong About Modi Becoming First Among Unequals?

By Sudheer Jha

Our politics are now at their adversarial worst. We seem to be in constant electioneering mode, which means that political rivals focus on trying to define the adversary’s image. Which is what the Congress party is trying to do to prime minister Narendra Modi.

With his mother not taking as active a role as before, and with a figurehead as the leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party, Rahul Gandhi has now emerged as the de facto leader of the opposition, which is quite a transformation from being the crown prince.

In politics, as in business, friends can also be rivals. This can be seen in the case of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and his Telangana counterpart K Chandrashekara Rao. TDP leaders always claim that Chandrababu is a 'guru' to KCR.

But now it seems that the Shishya has dealt a major blow to his Guru. KCR and Chandrababu were once close friends enjoying a guru-shishya relationship. Although KCR is the Chief Minister of the newly formed state, the Andhra Pradesh CM is much senior when it comes to political career.
