Indian Urdu Media: Fanning Minority Fears In Tears

Of all categories of people in our societies, journalists understand meanings of words instinctively and the societal context in which they are understood by common readers. Shahid Siddiqui is the chief editor and owner of Nai Duniya, an Urdu newspaper that has been read by Indian Muslims for over 41 years.

Siddiqui controls the weekly newspaper and decides images, headlines and articles that are published. Since it is generally accepted that Muslims have low literacy levels and cannot evolve enlightened responses to emerging issues, it is reasonable to expect Siddiqui’s newspaper to show a positive path for Indian Muslims.

As a school-going youth in the 1980s, this writer watched Siddiqui’s newspaper arrive regularly in bookstalls at railway stations with cover pages that would leap to our eyes with messages such as: Islam is in danger; Muslims are under siege; the West is hunting Muslims; Jews are evil. It hasn’t changed.

The Love of Animals in Islam - A Close Look

Islam urges people to be respectful and merciful towards animals.

On a recent shopping trip, I happened to pass by a pet shop, where a big monkey in a small cage outside the entrance broke my heart.

I gathered up the guts to enter the shop, only to leave in tears deeply saddened by what I had seen. Poor, helpless animals imprisoned in tiny cages without even enough space to turn around. Their sad, pleading eyes haunted me as I fought the urge to set them free.

After Trilokpuri, North Delhi's Bawana Simmering Under The Shadow Of Communal Tensions

A week after tensions engulfed Delhi's Trilokpuri locality, anti-social elements are once trying to flare communal tensions in North Delhi's Bawana locality.

According to news reports, the area was being 'patrolled' by a group of around 200 motorcycle-born youths under police protection, since early October. The group had been demanding an end to alleged cow slaughter on the occasion of Eid ul-Adha. They had even searched premises belonging to minority community on the pretext of preventing cow slaughter.

Special Report: Is The Spirit Of Sport Dying?

Sport has been in the news for all the wrong reasons lately. Cheating, absence of the sporting spirit in competitions, and scant respect for opponents seem to be on the rise globally. What is shocking is that penalties seem to have little effect on potential troublemakers while more and more people are approaching courts of law for redressals, more so abroad.

Some incidents involving sports persons in foreign land range from the usual to the bizarre. This year, Florida State baseball team suspended one of its players, Jameis Winston, for “stealing” 32 dollars worth of crab legs and crawfish from a supermarket after the issue was taken to a court. The recent local headlines included Atletico de Kolkata footballers and coach behaving in an unsportsmanlike manner in the ongoing Indian Super League.

SHOCKING! Despite scoring 91 in class 12th maths exam, education board FAILS the topper

A 12th standard student challenges Secondary Education Board in High Court for their negligence in allocation of marks. The board flunked him in maths, while he scored 91% after the matter went to court.

Akshay Jaiswal, who lives in Dwarkapuri in Delhi has given his 12th board examination in the year 2014 scoring more than 90% in all subjects. But he was flunked for allegedly not appearing in maths examination.

Akshay sent the examination centre's record to the board but seeing no relief, he filed a petition in the Delhi High Court. On the strictness of the court the board submitted the score sheet - where Akshay in a sealed scored 91% envelope. The court slammed Rs. 25,000 compensation on the education board.
