‍‍‍‍The Best 5 Ways To Build Your Brand Online

As you may have noticed the cost of acquiring customers by running ads on Google or Facebook has increased by over 30-40% compared with last year.

This means that some of the businesses that were reliant on these platforms are not able to grow. In this article, we are sharing five alternative ways to build and grow your business online.

We will start by understanding the importance of building your brand and how it can help you grow your business for the long term.  The following tactics will guarantee success for your business, but at the same time, it needs lot of focus commitment.

A case for building a brand – why?

Most of the small businesses and start-ups rely on short-term marketing efforts. Unfortunately, in this digital dominant marketing world, we become obsessed with ROI, metrics and measurable goals.

As a savvy digital marketers, we think of marketing as more of the bottom of the funnel optimization. If we spend X, how much Y do we get? How many leads, how many closures, how many sales? All measured and accounted. The best part is that digital advertising platforms such as Google Ads, Facebook Ads makes it simple.

There is nothing wrong with it but, this leaves you at the mercy of advertising platforms such as Google, Facebook etc. Once the bidding war starts between many advertisers for the same audience, all the advertisers pay higher and higher prices. The only winner that remains is the platform itself. It can shoot your per customer acquisition costs through the roof.

And then you think – may we could have made an effort to build our brand earlier.

Let’s step aside for a while and observe.

We see some of the largest brands like Freshworks or any of those big companies; they spend a massive amount of time and energy just building the brand, right? So they’re not talking about selling you a CRM or asking you to join a demo; they’re just investing in brand awareness.

Why brand? Though it takes longer to build brand awareness and affinity, it acts as an accelerant through the rest of the marketing and sales processes. Prospects go directly to Google and search for your brand name and enter your sales funnel. And indeed, these prospects have very high conversion rates, lowering your per customer marketing cost.

And don’t get intimidated; it doesn’t require a massive advertising budget but only consistent effort and planning.

Let’s go right in with first technique.

FIRST: Build Trust by Offering Valuable and Insightful Content

Music is content. A piece of good music is valuable content. A blog article is content. An insightful blog article is brandable content. A social media post is content. Shareable social media is valuable content. You get the idea. In the content world, quality wins over quantity.
Valuable content builds brand affinity. It builds trust and makes people choose you over competitors. Leading with valuable and educational content can create an everlasting marketing machine.

Nowadays, creating videos, building a Youtube channel, and building a podcast has never been easier.

It always helps to think about what value a user can extract from your content. Be it insight, save money, or even laugh.  Your high quality content should add value to your audience. This is the mantra.

Don’t worry that the sales cycle is long. Play the long game. Provide value to your audiences, and they will reward you.

SECOND: Get Brand Collaboration to Reach Your Target Audience

Let’s be practical; creating a decent amount of good content takes a lot of effort and time. Further, it will take months before you can build your audience.
Here is what you can do. First, identify influencers, bloggers and marketers who already have your target audience and collaborate with them. It will give you a head start.

You can call this whatever you want, kind of influence or marketing or affinity marketing or partnerships or anything like that. But my idea behind it is to take the same approach. Partner with somebody else either in your industry or serves the same industry or has the attention of your industry. You can do anything to piggyback on someone else’s audience, essentially.

Also, look for synergies and complimentary. For example, if you sell mobile accessories, you can partner with tech and mobile bloggers and Youtubers. There are many synergies here, they are not competitors, but they can provide value. We can bring an audience to them that they wouldn’t have been able to reach before, and they can get an audience to us that we wouldn’t have been able to reach before.

It works when both the partners benefit equally. So I think it has to be that way that there’s an equal benefit or very close to similar use for both parties.

THIRD: Build Organic Social Channel With Deep Content Strategy

It is no surprise that organic social is usually underutilized.

In digital marketing, paid social channels can be so effective that businesses often lack the patients to invest in organic social. Instead, they can run a Facebook ad or Linkedin ads to increase reach, drive traffic, generate leads or sales quickly.

But building brand awareness and brand affinity need a different strategy. Owning and building followers on organic social channels is highly rewarding in the long run.

Writing a blog post for SEO purposes and then sharing that blog post on organic social doesn’t work. To build your brand, you will need to attract your audience with the right content concepts.

Additionally, if your competitors are not big on organic social, it is a huge opportunity. Double down on organic social and see your cost of customer acquisition goes down. Promising content compounds and creates an everlasting competitive advantage.

FOURTH: Build A Community

The idea here is to build brand affinity by building a community. A community is something interactive and engaging – consistently. That’s what I mean by community.

To build a community, have a discussion. For example, do a webinar rather than doing pre-recorded videos. Then, your customers or prospects can join the conversation, contribute questions, and you can answer and discuss.

Most software companies host user events or annual conferences. Something that builds discussion builds a community, even if that’s only once a year — a big way to build brand affinity.

Suppose you are a manufacturing company or a technology company. In that case, there are many ways you can start a discussion because there are people in your industry who want to grow and discuss ideas.
The marketing team has to start somewhere to promote an idea. So, for example, show what you’re doing with your equipment or our product. Where do you integrate? How does this work? How does it save you? And people will show you different use cases of leveraging your product than you ever thought was possible. Because people always find new solutions. So having that sort of thing not only helps you identify your customers better but also propels your brand forward.

If leveraged correctly, your customer is your best salesperson, but how can they sell on your behalf if those people don’t have a microphone? Right? So it’s always been that case studies referrals, testimonials, That’s what people want at some point of that buyer’s journey. They want to see that they want someone to instill confidence in them. So a conversation led by your customers talking about how happy they are with your product or service or how they’ve leveraged your technology to impact their business can make a huge difference.

FIFTH: Events and Webinars

The fifth idea is events.
Suppose you are hosting events, whether they’re small or big, intimate conversations that helped build that community. Seek collaboration with industry experts and speakers that inherently brings some brand awareness and credibility to the brand.

And then you mix in the rest of these components that we’re talking about, of adding value by creating a sense of community that is going to be something that takes you to the next level. So it’s an engagement that matters.

Create a positive experience. And it’s something that, frankly, you know, as marketers, you might not be able to measure, but you certainly can see the impact over time.

Well, this is a marathon, not a sprint.

There are tons of other things you can do. These are just five ideas that I came up with, but I’ve seen work.

All the best. #KhabarLive #hydnews

‍The Best Guide To Beginners For The World Of Cryptocurrency

The Cryptocurrency is a form of digital asset based on a network that is distributed across a large number of computers.

In the era of digitalisation, the form of money has also changed rapidly. From barter systems to old age coins, paper notes, now we have jumped towards digital currencies. Cryptocurrencies have emerged as the new method of exchange to purchase various products and services globally. Also, some are buying houses and cars and visualising their future in it. It has made very rapid popularity in the few years. Lets understand Cryptocurrencies in detail.

What are Cryptocurrencies?
Cryptocurrencies are digital currencies or digital moneywhich do not exist in physical forms like coins and cash. But it exists in the virtual form and holds significant value. It can be stored in a ‘digital wallet’ on a smartphone or computer, and owners can send them to people to buy things.

Blockchain is the technology that enables cryptocurrency to function. Blockchain is a decentralised system that organises and records transactions across multiple computers. The security of this technology is part of its attraction.

In addition, unlike regular money, which is created around centralised distribution, cryptocurrency is maintained using something called a distributed ledger. This makes a great degree of transparency but further anonymity through the use of encryption. They are able to exist outside of the control of governments and central authorities because of their decentralised nature. Bitcoin is considered the first cryptocurrency which was developed by a Japanese programmer Satoshi Nakamoto in the year 2009.

How Do Cryptocurrencies Work?
When a transaction takes place through cryptocurrencies, then no third parties like banks or others involves. This exchange of digital currencies is known as ‘peer-to-peer transactions. Importantly, every transaction ever made is recorded on an immense database known as a blockchain - think about it as a large spreadsheet. Individual transactions made are represented by a block that is added to the larger chain, hence the name blockchain, and all the transactions remain in the blockchain forever.

Blockchain is not based in a central location but is scattered among a large network of computers which is kept protected at all times through complex systems. This makes it virtually impossible for anyone to tamper with a blockchain and guarantees all transactions and users are shielded.

Cryptocurrencies have the potential to make it simpler to move payments between two parties without the use of a trusted third party such as a bank or credit card firm. Instead, these transactions are protected by the use of public and private keys and other incentive systems like Proof of Work and Proof of Stake.

In current cryptocurrency systems, a user’s “wallet” or account address has a public key, while the private key is only known by the owner and is used to sign transactions. As a result, users can avoid the high costs banks and financial institutions charge for wire transfers by completing fund transactions with minimum processing expenses.

How Do You Get Hold of Cryptocurrencies?
The process of holding cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin through a process is termed mining. Also, they can buy and sell too. Individuals or groups can set up computers with high powers, and these are tasked with working out incredibly tough equations. Moreover, machines can add transactions to the blockchain, and further check their validity, ensuring they’re all accurate.

To purchase cryptocurrencies, you’ll need a “wallet,” an internet software that stores your funds. In general, you open an account at a cryptocurrency exchange and then use real money to purchase cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum.

However, the sums are becoming more and more complex as more Bitcoins enter circulation - a fancy way of saying there are more coins up for grabs - to make sure there are not too many being generated. To put it in context, if you were to begin mining now, it could be years before you got a single Bitcoin.

Coinbase is a well-known cryptocurrency exchange where you can open a wallet and buy and sell Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Cryptocurrencies are also available via an increasing number of online brokers, including eToro, Tradestation, and Sofi Active Investing.

Popular Cryptocurrencies
Bitcoin was the first blockchain-based cryptocurrency, and it is still the most popular and lucrative. However, thousands of alternative cryptocurrencies exist today, each with its own set of features and requirements. Some are Bitcoin clones or forks, while others are brand-new currencies created from the ground up.

Litecoin, Peercoin, Namecoin, and Ethereum, Cardano, and EOS are some of the rival cryptocurrencies generated by Bitcoin’s success. The entire value of all cryptocurrencies has surpassed 1.8 trillion dollars, with Bitcoin accounting for around 46.5 per cent of that total.

Criticisms in Recent Years
Since cryptocurrency market values are determined by supply and demand, the rate at which a cryptocurrency may be traded for another currency might vary greatly. This is especially true because many cryptocurrencies are designed to be scarce.

There is a worry that any tangible assets do not back cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. According to certain studies, the cost of creating a Bitcoin, which consumes a growing quantity of energy, is directly proportional to its market price.

Although bitcoin blockchains are extremely secure, other elements of the cryptocurrency ecosystem, including as exchanges and wallets, are vulnerable to hacking. Several online exchanges have been hacked and stolen over Bitcoin’s ten-year lifespan, with millions of dollars in “coins” taken in certain cases.

Despite this, many analysts regard cryptocurrencies as having potential benefits, such as the ability to preserve value against inflation and facilitate exchange while being simpler to carry and split than precious metals and existing beyond the authority of central banks and governments.

Cryptocurrencies have been chastised for various reasons, including their usage for criminal operations, exchange rate volatility, and the infrastructure that underpins them being vulnerable. Their mobility, divisibility, inflation resistance, and transparency, on the other hand, have been lauded.

Cryptocurrency as An Investment
Cryptocurrencies may appreciate in value, but many investors regard them as speculative investments rather than long-term investments. What is the reason behind this? Cryptocurrencies, like actual currencies, have no cash flow. Therefore, for you to benefit, someone else must pay more for the currency than you did. This is known as the “greater fool” investment hypothesis. In contrast, a well-managed firm grows in value over time through increased profitability and cash flow.

For those who believe that cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin will be the currency of the future, it’s important to remember that a currency needs to be stable for merchants and customers to know what a fair price for products is. This price fluctuation is a problem.

People might be less inclined to spend and circulate bitcoins now if they are worth a lot more in the future, making them less viable as a currency. However, the boom in popularity and accessibility has led to a general acceptance of cryptocurrency as a probable future of money. #KhabarLive #hydnews

‍Article Marketing - A Powerful Tool For Web Traffic

The technique of article marketing is unique, you can get many benefits with one target shot. In this article, we will try to explain you the procedure.

Article marketing has a lot of power to attract web traffic, turn that traffic into customers, and make several sales a day. You can use article marketing to sell any product on earth, from a house, to a car, to a computer to a software package, to a pen or paper, as long as you can earn a commission, article marketing is the perfect way to make sales.

First you need to become an expert in the profitable niche. Insurance products require you to have deep knowledge about insurance, your article is the sales man and a poor article will not make a reader stay long and much less purchase anything from you. Start by perfecting your knowledge about those profitable niches and turn article marketing into a power house of money.

Second, you need to write a long article. Small articles do not present the reader with much expertise, do not show you are a true expert, just another writer trying to sell them something. Longer articles possess more keyword count and keyword diversity. The ideal article is always at least four hundred keywords long and the perfect article at least one thousand keywords long. Those writers with free time should aim to keep the article as long as possible specially for expensive products. Trying to sell a computer and earning 20% of the revenue? You definitely need to write at least three thousand words, like a sales letter.

Third keep the reader interested in reading more about your expertise. If the directory allows, place several related reading links and focus on the product, send the reader to an article that is similar to the article the reader just read. For example you can write about computer search and in another article internet search or computer desktop search. All topics must be either exact or very similar.

Fourth, aim to keep your article views high all the time, this salesman is very important but only if the salesman is getting customers. Send your article to all directories, Facebook if you have interested friends, Twitter if your followers love article marketing and StumbleUpon and Digg and all other networks that allow articles to be added and indexed. The more the better, this is a key component to success!

One article has enough power to deliver endless traffic, as long as the article is cared about. To care about an article means to constantly increase its size, adding new information, make it fresh. There is no sense in writing a ton of low quality articles that no one reads or clicks.

Finally, your article marketing techniques must be developed by learning new keywords. Google is blind to anything but keywords and so are readers. Research deeply the right keywords, keep them fresh and use them all each one in a new article. Do not combine keywords to confuse search engines and readers.

Remember the final goal is to convert a reader into a customer and then into a loyal reader and finally a loyal customer. #KhabarLive #hydnews

‍‍‍Hyderabad Yatch ‍‍Club Celebrates 'Azaadi Ka Amrit Mahautsav' Sailing With Lesser Privileged Children

The Credo of the Yacht Club is Dignity through Sports. The Yacht Club of Hyderabad marks 75 years of India’s Independence with a flourish of saffron white and green as part of the National Azaadi Ka Amrit Mahautsav celebrations at Hussain Sagar Lake in Hyderabad.

The Yacht Club of Hyderabad is now one of the fastest growing, performance-oriented water-sports facility in the country, bestowed with world-class training systems for both recreational and competitive sailing, and continues to perform at the top levels of national sailing consistently.

It was done taking inspiration from The Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, an intensive, countrywide campaign announced by the Government of India to focus on citizen  participation in nation-building, where small changes, at the local level, will add up to significant national gains.

With 86 state and national medals, multiple national titles and three of its wards being selected for the Asian and World Championships, the YCH Foundation reaffirms its dedication to the nation with a display of the tricolour lighting up the very waters that also played a key role in nurturing the four Indian Sailing Olympians at Tokyo 2021 during their formative years.

Suheim Sheikh loves sailing. A graduate from IIT Madras, he ran a software products company involved in the creation of real-time Stock Trading and Surveillance systems and worked extensively on Fraud Management. Leaving this world of software behind, he decided to pursue his passion and make a difference using it as a tool for the upliftment of lesser privileged children.

Suheim purchased a few boats when he was the Commodore at the Secunderabad Club. He then approached the Army. The Army was willing to help him park the boats but this wasn’t enough, as the sailors weren’t getting any access.

Suheim then approached the State Government for assistance. Since water-bodies are under the purview of the State Government, he explained his intentions to them. It wasn’t difficult persuading them, and Suheim soon found himself well on his way to realise his dream of making children take up sailing seriously as a sport.

Says Suheim “It seemed unfair that the city could not access the water while having such a beautiful lake in its midst. I have enjoyed the sport and the lake for so many formative years of my life.”

Thus was born the Yacht Club of Hyderabad, with the intent of creating infrastructure for all to access. Sailing has been an integral part of the city, and it’s iconic Hussain Sagar lake for more than a century. Suheim, however, noticed that sailing was a sport which wasn’t within everyone’s grasp.

Most of the competitions organised were inter-club events, open only to club members. As for the participants, most were seniors. There were very few children.

Suheim conceptualised the Monsoon Regatta in 2009. In its first year, the event became the largest sailing event in India. Finally, Suheim had broken a barrier, which allowed only Army and Navy personnel or wealthy civilians to take part in sailing.

But Suheim really wanted to do is train a mixed batch of children. Those who couldn’t afford to sail, but had the talent. The Army only takes in jawans after the age of 18. In order to excel at a sport, you need to begin much earlier.

The first batch of 2009 saw three or four kids from a government school taking part in the program. Suheim and his team explained to the children that their education, fees and tuition would be taken care of.

“Dignity through Sports”, is what Suheim termed this initiative.

Set up as a not-for-profit enterprise, the club focused on honing the skills of economically challenged children from government schools. This hard work paid off, as the club produced two national champions in the sub-junior and junior categories within six years, and many in the top 10.

The program is simple and effective. Orphans and deprived children with diverse backgrounds like farming and labour are trained to top levels during the first six years, with their education and nutrition funded and monitored by the Yacht Club of Hyderabad. Many of these kids have decided to give back, and have become instructors at the club.

Suheim is pleased with the way the program is helping change lives. One of the kids sailed with the team for a few years, after which he joined the Indian Armed Forces. The number of batches increased, and so did the focus and drive of the children participating in it.

Inspired by the success of this venture, Suheim started a program called the “Naavika Program”, exclusively for girls. Once again, the Yacht Club of Hyderabad worked with girls from government schools.

Thus, starting with four children and three small boats, the Yacht Club of Hyderabad today has 50 odd boats and more than 50 children participating in the program. Working largely as a privately funded organisation, it focuses on deprived children of government schools, teaching them to sail at the national level.

Suheim uses the sport as a medium to help these children upgrade their ability to handle challenges, success and failure, and fine-tune their spirit of competitiveness.

The Yacht Club helps kids with career counselling, helping them with admission to better institutions, and providing them with nutrition, medical aid, bikes to get them to school, and academic help. The kids travel across the country to championships, and some have even ventured as far as Hong Kong and Singapore for regattas.

Suheim works with children from diverse backgrounds. Kids from affluent families also attend the program, and this has its own benefits. One turns aspirational, and the other a bit humble from the interaction. The focus of the program is to provide kids with a stable and sustainable career, and move them gradually from the vernacular medium to English, and finally into a lucrative profession of their choice.

The Yacht Club of Hyderabad works closely with the Social Welfare Department of Hyderabad, and also the Naandi Foundation. The club is actively and continuously involved in the development of the children, holistically.

Constantly upgrading infrastructure is expensive, but thankfully, having paid students in his batches helps Suheim meet the many costs that need to be taken care of. The Yacht Club hence has some of the finest facilities in the country, which is helpful in making it more revenue-stable and less dependent on donations.

Every good venture always faces hiccups in the beginning, and the Yacht Club of Hyderabad is no exception. Whenever there is an idea that feels out-of-the-box, people tend to object. Suheim recalls a few naysayers who objected to starting another sailing club in Hyderabad, especially when it wasn’t going to compete with the Army or the Navy or against other leading clubs.

Completely missing the point of Suheim’s venture, these voices of dissent discouraged him from starting the program of helping kids.

Thankfully, Suheim decided to steamroll the resistance by just carrying on with his vision. He, however, maintains that if sailing were promoted as a sport by the State Government, instead of a privately run sport, participation would increase.

Sailing is still at a nascent level in India, and if the Government takes over at this stage, it would open the doors to a wider range of audiences willing to participate. A sport is not just for the privileged few, but for all.

If more children take up sailing, the talent-pool will increase, raising the skill-level of the sport in the country. Suheim gives us the example of the child of a house-maid, who went on to win the National Championships.
Speaking in broken English didn’t deter the participant, who beat the competition hollow. #KhabarLive #hydnews

We Need A New ‘Quit India’ Movement For True Independence'

My father went to jail in the 1942 Quit India movement. He was interned for 2.5 years in Delhi and Lucknow jails and was released in 1946.

I often used to ask him whether he and thousands of Indians like him who sacrificed so much for India's independence ever thought that it would become such a chaotic and corrupt country.

Ransomware Attacks Can Seriously Cripple Systems Like Aadhaar

WannaCry, the cyber attack that recently crippled Britain's National Health Service, and jammed hundred and thousands of computers in Spain, Russia, Ukraine, Taiwan and several other countries, should be a wake-up call for all of us—individuals, organisations and governments—who tend to take cyber security lightly.

What's WannaCry all about? It's what's known as ransomware—a particularly nasty type of malware that blocks access to a computer or its data and demands money to release it. The malicious software is planted on the network and temporarily stalls users from accessing their systems till a specified amount of "ransom" is paid electronically. Usually, the ransom demand is in the form of crypto currencies such as Bitcoin whose transaction trail is virtually untraceable. Once the ransom is paid, the files and data are decrypted by the hacker. In most cases, the lockdown is done through Trojans which are planted into the network system as simple phishing or spam emails.

Stop blaming the H-1B visa for India’s brain drain—it actually achieved the opposite

The lure of going to work in the US’ information technology (IT) sector is often blamed for causing a brain-drain in India but new research shows it helped power the country’s own IT boom, too.

As computer science-related occupations began to grow in the US in the nineties, the proportion of foreigners in the field grew from 9% in 1994 to 24% in 2012. That spurt was almost entirely driven by Indians drawn by the promise of higher wages for the same work. By 2014, 86% of computer science H-1B visas, used by US tech firms to bring in skilled labour from abroad, had been acquired by Indians, who became a useful pool of English-speaking and highly-skilled labour in an era of technological innovations and increasing software demand.

My Husband Sold My Virginity Even Before We Got Married, And That's The Price I Paid For My Perfect Arranged Marriage

We didn't get intimate on our wedding night because he wanted me to remain a virgin for sometime. Editor's Note: Stop pretending like this is normal, that it happens. It does and it shouldn't, share this story and help put a stop to this.

When I think about how I was born and brought up in Agra, the city where one man's love for his wife has evidence made of marble, I can't quite understand where I belong anymore. Marriage has been a nasty twist to my perfectly ordinary life.

How H-1B Visa Changes Could Benefit Indian Professionals?

President Trump has issued an executive order directing some U.S. agencies to review the nonimmigrant, H-1B work visa policies, which at present allow companies to hire “skilled” foreign workers when employers say they cannot find qualified Americans. Trump has questioned the impact of the program, saying that it represses American wages by paying foreign workers less.

The U.S. issues 85,000 H-1B visas annually, and extends or reissues another 100,000 visas, according to Forbes. Last year, nearly 127,000 visas went to Indian nationals, about 21,700 to Chinese workers and 2,540 to Mexicans to round out the top three.

FORGET SOFTWARE—NOW HACKERS ARE EXPLOITING PHYSICS

By SARAH WILLIAMS ! INNLIVE

PRACTICALLY EVERY WORD we use to describe a computer is a metaphor. “File,” “window,” even “memory” all stand in for collections of ones and zeros that are themselves representations of an impossibly complex maze of wires, transistors and the electrons moving through them. But when hackers go beyond those abstractions of computer systems and attack their actual underlying physics, the metaphors break.

Over the last year and a half, security researchers have been doing exactly that: honing hacking techniques that break through the metaphor to the actual machine, exploiting the unexpected behavior not of operating systems or applications, but of computing hardware itself—in some cases targeting the actual electricity that comprises bits of data in computer memory. And at the Usenix security conference earlier this month, two teams of researchers presented attacks they developed that bring that new kind of hack closer to becoming a practical threat.

Breaking Assumptions
Both of those new attacks use a technique Google researchers first demonstrated last March called “Rowhammer.” The trick works by running a program on the target computer, which repeatedly overwrites a certain row of transistors in its DRAM flash memory, “hammering” it until a rare glitch occurs: Electric charge leaks from the hammered row of transistors into an adjacent row. The leaked charge then causes a certain bit in that adjacent row of the computer’s memory to flip from one to zero or vice versa. That bit flip gives you access to a privileged level of the computer’s operating system.

It’s messy. And mind-bending. And it works.

Rowhammer and similar attacks could require both hardware and software makers to rethink defenses based on purely digital models. “Computers, like all technologies really, are built in layers that make assumptions of one another. Think of a car, assuming its wheels roll and absorb shocks, and don’t melt into goop when they get wet,” says security researcher Dan Kaminsky, who found a fundamental flaw in the Internet’s domain name system in 2008. “What’s interesting about networked technology is the fact that those assumptions can be attacked.”

Last year, Thomas Dullien (one of the inventors of the technique, perhaps better known by his hacker handle Halvar Flake) and his fellow Google researchers showed that they could use electricity leakage to flip crucial bits in the DRAM memory of a set of laptops, the first proof that charge leakage could be predictable and exploitable. Researchers in Austria and France followed up a few months later to show the attack could be enabled by javascript code running in a browser.

Those variations on Rowhammer, along with the newest ones presented at Usenix, show that the hacker world is increasingly focused on techniques that break those fundamental assumptions of computing. “Rowhammer is just scratching the surface,” says Dullien. “This has the potential to be a gigantic field of research.”

Making Rowhammer Practical and Specific
The latest attacks take Rowhammer in a new direction, applying it to cloud computing services and enterprise workstations rather than consumer PCs. One attack by a group of Ohio State researchers used the technique to hack Xen, the software used to partition computing resources on cloud servers into isolated “virtual machines” rented to customers. The hack breaks out of those virtual machines to control deeper levels of the server.

second paper by Dutch and Belgian researchers achieves a similar effect, and also shows a new way to use Rowhammer more reliably. It exploits a feature called “memory de-duplication” that combines identical parts of virtual machines’ memory into a single place in the memory of a physical computer. On the Dell workstation the researchers tested, they could write data into the memory of a virtual machine and then use that data to locate and “hammer” the physical transistors underlying not just those bits of data, but the identical bits on someone else’s virtual machine running on the same computer.

The trick, which the researchers call “Flip Feng Shui,” allowed the group to pull off highly targeted hacks, like sabotaging an encryption key so that they could later decrypt a target’s secrets. “It’s less like a flamethrower and more like a sniper rifle,” says Ben Gras, one of the researchers at the University of Vrije who came up with it.1

A New Level of Stealth
Rowhammer is far from the only new hacking technique that exploits computers’ physical properties. Proof-of-concept malware shown off by Israeli researchers over the summer, for instance, uses the sound ofcomputers’ cooling fans orhard drive motors to transmit stolen data as audio. Another group of Israelis showed last year they could use just $300 of handheld equipment to extract encryption keys from a computer by monitoring the radio emissions leaked by its processor’s power use.

But as with Rowhammer, the most disturbing physical hacks are microscopic. University of Michigan researchers have been able to build a secret backdoor into a single cell—a collection of transistors less than a thousandth of the width of a human hair—among billions on a modern microchip. When a hacker who knows about the backdoor’s existence runs a certain program, it causes that cell to pick up charge from nearby transistors and induce a certain bit to flip, just as in the Rowhammer attacks. The result is an ultra-stealthy physical sabotage technique that’s virtually impossible to detect with digital security measures. “It’s operating outside of the Matrix,” says Matthew Hicks, one of the Michigan researchers, who described the technique to WIRED in June.

This kind of exploitation of hardware means that no software update can help. Researchers have identified one countermeasure to Rowhammer’s memory charge leakage: a feature of DRAM called “error-correcting code” constantly corrects abnormal levels of charge in any particular transistor. More widely implementing that feature in computer memory could head off current implementations of the Rowhammer attack.

But Dullien warns that DRAM is just one potential target.  “Lots of things—chips, hard disks, whatever—are designed to be OK in the average case but probably not when they’re given adversarial input,” he says. “We don’t know where the next broken piece of hardware will show up. But that’s why everyone’s so excited about researching this more.” Computer scientists may soon find their machines aren’t just vulnerable in ways they haven’t considered, but in ways their digital models don’t even allow them to imagine.

1Correction 5:30 pm EST 8/31/2016: An earlier version of the story stated that the “Flip Feng Shui” technique applied to a Dell server, not a Dell workstation, and could be used to alter the generation of an encryption key, when in fact they showed it could be used to alter a pre-existing “public key” so that messages encrypted with that altered public key could be decrypted without the private key.

Preacher Zakir Naik's Peace TV And Its Videos Are Banned, But Where They Made?

By NEWS KING | INNLIVE

Zakir Naik's now-infamous Peace TV has its offices in Dubai, Saudi Arabia, the USA and UK, but none in India. Officially speaking.

However, India - more specifically, the tiny area of Dongri in South Mumbai - is actually where Naik's videos are made.

A bit of background: Naik's 'provocative' Peace TV speeches and videos are said to have inspired some of the Bangladeshi terrorists, who killed 22 people, mostly foreigners, in the month of Ramzan at an upscale restaurant in Dhaka on 1 July.

IT Graduates Aplenty In Hyderabad, But Where Are The 'Skilled'?

By NEWSCOP | INNLIVE

A steady 6% to 9% year-on-year increase in workforce notwithstanding, Hyderabad's IT sector is faced with a severe crunch - that of skilled resources.

Experts rue how a majority of the nearly 2 lakh students graduating from city engineering colleges every year do not have technical expertise - particularly in fast-growing fields such as cyber security and analytics - thus creating a huge demand-supply gap.
