New Trend Of Marketing In Politics Is Gaining Momentum

By Dolphy Mendosa | Mumbai

In the wildest of Dream, the founding father of Marketing would not have imagined such an innovative, creative, out of the box application of Marketing concept!! Yes, the readers of this blog are thinking right it is a unique marriage between Marketing and Politics.

Ever since politics has become synonymous with the power, marketing has been used widely by politician for own advantage. In fact, now a days political pundit is hiring multitude of professionals to work for their cause in fact marketing has been used increasingly in politics.

Everyone knows the campaigning in politics and how everyone projects their party’s achievements.  But a novel concept is slowly emerging where a politician projects himself in such a way that he is instrumental in getting things done by putting up posters, advertisements and through various other forms of media.

Recently while travelling to home from work near chakala when the bus stopped at a signal, Noticed a mobile advertising van stationed near a Petrol Pump.  It had a huge well lighted  colourful banner  of  Gurudas Kamat (MP from North West Mumbai Constituency and currently Minister of State of Drinking Water and Sanitation).

Gurudas Kamat (born 5 October 1954) is an Indian politician. Member of Parliament elected from Mumbai North West constituency in 2009.He is an advocate by profession. He is from the Indian National Congress, he has represented Mumbai North East constituency in the Lok Sabha  four times (1984, 1991, 1998, and 2004).

He has an MBA Degree and is a commerce graduate. He got married on 11 May 1981 and has a son. In 1976, he was awarded the Principal Wellingkar Trophy for the outstanding Student Award at the R.A.Poddar College and in 1979 a fellow of Government Law College in Mumbai. He served as the Minister of State for Home affairs with additional charge of Information Technology and Communications Ministry, Government of India during 2009 to 2011. In July 2011 he resigned as minister.

Gurudas Kamat has suddenly surfaced with various news interviews, Banners, poster, mobile advertisement Vans and other various types of media.  What was observed the way he is marketing himself as the one who got the infrastructure works completed or sanctioned.  All his advertisements show the pics of Eastern Freeway, Mono rail, Metro and other completed infrastructure works.

He has cleverly inserted his pics with PM Manmohan Singh, Congress President Ms Sonia Gandhi, and Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi.   These pics may have been taken for different reasons but the way it is featured makes people think he is the one who is getting approvals for the Infrastructure projects.  This is the most ingenious way of marketing himself.   He is even put a slogan proclaiming “The MP who got things done for Mumbai”

Interestingly  AAP candidate from Nagpur Anjali Damania at  a press conference for an expose on BJP leader Nitin Gadkari was asked  “Do you have any such plan regarding MP Gurudas Kamat? Anjali replied “ Many people in the constituency have told me that nobody has seen Kamat in the last five years. Interestingly, he has not asked a single question in Parliament in the last two years.

The entire constituency is in a mess. What kind of MP is he?  Despite having the funds, poor people are suffering due to non-utilisation of funds”.   The Aam Aadmi Party's candidate for the Mumbai North West constituency is Mayank Gandhi set to take on senior MP Gurudas Kamat.

Whatever is said and done  Gurudas Kamat has certainly stole a march over his rival parties and even within his own party by spearheading the most innovative way of marketing himself and preparing himself for the next election while most of the other parties and candidates are busy finalizing their campaign.  This trend is going to catch on in the next series of campaigning, what will be interesting to see, how others are going to use this tool to project themselves in a positive way.

It is sure that, this unique concept of “Marketing in Politics” is surely going to change the way of campaigning in the coming elections.
