A country where poor and deprived masses die every day in dearth of proper medical treatment and in the absence of sound public healthcare facilities, Rohtas Nagar Congress MLA Vipin Sharma has claimed a whopping Rs. 1.32 crore of medical reimbursement during fourth Delhi Assembly.
Similarly, the legislatures of the present Delhi Assembly have received large amount of public money against the claims made by them for travel expenses. BJP MLA from Shakur Basti Shyam Lal Garg made total claims of Rs. 3.87 lakh during the past five years.
The details have been provided by the Delhi government under the RTI reply to activist Subhash Agrawal.
Besides Sharma who claimed Rs. 1.32 crore of medical reimbursement during the last five years, other major claimant MLAs include independent MLA from Najafgarh Bharat Singh with Rs. 27.5 lakh and BJP MLA from Hari Nagar Harsharan Singh Balli with Rs. 17.4 lakh.
Among those who made the least claim of medical reimbursement are Congress MLA from Chandni Chowk Prahlad Singh Sawhney who has spent a modest amount of Rs. 8,182 during the past five years and BJP MLA Jai Bhagwan Aggarwal who claimed only Rs. 15,121, reveals the RTI reply.
While Shyam Lal Garg tops the list of claimants of travel allowances with Rs. 3.87 lakh, Rajouri Garden MLA Dayanand Chandila claimed the lowest amount of Rs. 17,682 in the past five years.
According to rules, MLAs can avail free medical treatment or reimbursement and free accommodation in all hospitals run by government and all other panel or referral hospitals empanelled or declared as such by the government in accordance with the medical attendance rules and the Delhi Government Employees Health Scheme (DGEHS).
The facilities will be available on priority basis as available to group-A officers of the highest grade of the government, provided that a compulsory monthly contribution shall be levied from every minister, the same rate as would be payable by a Group A officer of the highest grade of the government which shall be recoverable from the monthly salary of the minister.
