The Kolkata based 23year old Sudipto Gupta an activist of Student Federation of India and a Master student of Political Science lost his life in the police custody. This has made an alarming impact that a student politics may kill a student. Sudipto Gupta was the state committee member of SFI and he was involved in the law breaking rally on 2nd of April against the cause of postponing election.
The involvement of the student in the law breaking rally is common but who knows that may lead a student to face death? Did his father and sister know that they have seen Sudipto for the last time before he leave from home for rally? Did his fellow students know that they will not able to attain class with Sudipto on the next day? No one knows! It is simply unbelievable that a student died after attaining rally in police custody.
Youth always involved them in the development of the society they are young and they fearlessly involve them for the development. Our society always encourages students and youths to be involved for the developmental issues as they fight for the truth. "Whenever there is a political crisis, students join mainstream politics and hold protests. Sudipto's death will bring back the tradition of students' movement in Bengal," senior CPM leader Mohd Salim said. Sudipto was one of such youth who involved himself in the student politics.
According to Sudipto’s sister “he devoted himself completely for the party without his families support. Many times his family tried to stop him but he keeps on working for the party. He was talented he wrote poems, songs, slogans by staying awake late at night for the party.” His father is completely shattered at the loss of his son completely speechless. A year back his father has lost his wife and this year his son he is all alone now.
As per the people present at the incident point they said that activist Sudipto along with other members of SFI were arrested and gathered inside the bus. The bus was taken near the Presidency jail and all the activist were announced to be set free but they wanted to go inside the lockup as they forcefully dragged down by the police from the bus in that fit of incident Sudipto Gupta got knocked by the lamppost and got severely injured.
Many said that even after Sudipto got knocked his head with the lamppost the police kept on beating him from the back he was not taken to the hospital at the right time even if after taken to hospital lately he was not been treated well and made Sudipto to be waited long two hours without any treatment. His fellow student said that due to delay in the medical treatment procedure they lost their friend Sudipto. According to the autopsied report of Sudipto Gupta it is to be said that Sudipto Gupta got injured at his forehead severely with his eye comes out, jaw-line and the back of his head and got injured due to internal hemorrhage at different parts of his body.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on the very evening of Sudipto Gupta’s loss in the police custody was at the inauguration program of Indian Premiere League at Yuvabharati krirangan in Kolkata without commenting or reacting at the loss. On the very next day i.e on 3rd of April when autopsied body of Sudipto Gupta was taken for the rally at the SFI office, his college and his Garia home before that Mamata Banerjee came to the SSKM hospital where Sudipto was admitted, meet his father and said “ she will help the family by any means” and after that according to the Left Front Chief Biman Bose said that she commented wrongly without getting the exact information of the cause of Sudipto Gupta’s death how can Mamata comment that “It was just an accident and it may happen every now and then, with her TMC members as well… even people travel in train by hanging at the door get knocked with the post and dies…”
Governor M.K Narayanan said that he don’t want to comment unless and until the investigation gets over. But there’s no such concrete evidence is found in-spite the incident took place at the Presidency Jail lane which is under CCTV but it is unable to get the footage because the incident took place at the 37 number pole which is in between 36 and 38 number pole where 36number pole faced at the main lane and 38 is faced towards the jail and there was no CCTV camera at the 37number pole to capture the exact incident.
With the centre round the issue there are road rallies organized in protest of Sudipto Gupta’s death, headed at different places of Kolkata. After all this, everyone is pointing out finger towards police, state, government. But ultimately it’s still unknown what the reason behind Sudipto’s death is? Was it a murder or accident is still yet to find?
His sister said that she don’t want party-politics to get involved into the matter of her brother’s death. She also expressed that politics has forced her brother to become the member and said “politics has robbed my brother” whereas on the next day after her brother’s funeral she thanked all party members for the support that everyone has given and said that “her brother has become famous after death”. But unlike such twist and twirls of statement and political tug of war the only thing that Sudipto’s family want is judicial probe so that they could get justice for Sudipto. His widowed father simply can’t imagine the loss of his only son Sudipto Gupta and keep on thinking of him by playing violin in the tune of famous Rabindra sangit “purano sei diner kotha ” (old days memories).
After all this Mamata Banerjee along with Amit Mitra who is the finance minister of West Bengal went to new Delhi to have a meeting with planning commission regarding the development of West Bengal and she planned 2 day trip to Delhi for the development of Bengal. There at the entrance of the planning commission they were heckled badly in protest of Sudipto Gupta’s death by the SFI and CPM members they have even beaten badly to the Amit Mitra. This creates a political brawl among the two party members. Both Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pleaded for such mishap that happened in-front of the planning commission.
This has create tension in West Bengal many left front offices are been attacked by the TMC members as Mamata returns she is admitted to hospital due to her illness and Presidency University is been attacked and ransacked badly by the members of the TMC .Now the situation has become completely whimsical and standing at this point the only question arise will Sudipto Gupta and his family will get Justice?
