UP Court Strikes Cupid: Pay Rs.50,000 For Love Marriage!

By Akhilesh Singh | INN Live

Uttar Pradesh, it seems, is no place for a poor lover. No offence meant, but love in UP comes at a cost of Rs.50,000. And that has happened after the court found itself a role even in courtship, thanks to the age of judicial activism.

According to a recent Allahabad High Court verdict, if you want to marry a girl against the wishes of her family in the state, you must have at least Rs.50,000 in your bank account. Only after you have placed this sum in a fixed deposit in the name of the girl, you can marry the girl.
Following the verdict, Director-General of Police Devraj Nagar has issued directives to implement the order all over the state.

The HC verdict comes in the wake of scores of such cases where girls marry against the families' wishes and are later ditched by their husbands.

Acting on a petition by one Rekha from Sant Kabir Nagar, the HC placed this cash guarantee clause to love marriages in the state.

According to Hardoi Police Superintendent Govind Agarwal, the police machinery is faced with a spate of kidnapping cases lodged against consenting adult couples who elope to marry against the wishes of their family members. These cases are later quashed when the girl is found to be major and consenting.

The HC verdict will help cops deal with such cases effectively. If there is a fixed deposit of the said amount for three years beforehand, no kidnapping case would be lodged against adult couples.

However, in case somebody tries to ditch a girl after marrying her with the due process set by the HC, he would not only be prosecuted but his money would also be confiscated.
