Stray dogs killed and ate a three-day-old baby girl, who was abandoned or rather thrown away on the roadside by unidentified persons, at Vanasthalipuram area in Hyderabad suburbs. It is not clear if the baby was alive when abandoned but, police suspect she was.
Following the incident, the police directed all nearby hospitals and nursing homes to provide details of women, who had delivered a baby girl in the last one week, including names and addresses of their family members.
Vanasthalipuram sub-inspector K Bhaskar Rao said morning walkers had spotted stray dogs mauling the baby at Siripuram Colony and informed them. The baby had died by the time the police arrived.
“The dogs had eaten away its hands, throat and a part of the head. They were still fighting for the flesh when the morning walkers saw them. The baby was wrapped in a plastic cover and cloth. It appeared to be three days old,” the sub-inspector said.
The police noticed imprints of bike tyres on the spot and suspect that those who had abandoned the baby might have come on a bike early in the morning. “We recovered the dead body minutes after we received information. We are yet to find out whether the baby was alive when she was abandoned. Locals claimed they had heard the baby crying when they had first spotted it,” a police official said.
The cops have also sought contact numbers and addresses of hospitals and nursing homes and wrote to them to provide these details soon.
“We will also direct the managements of hospitals located in Meerpet and Hayatnagar police limits to track the details of the victim,” the police said. A case of suspicious death was registered and the mutilated body handed over to government mortuary for further investigations.
