'Politics In AP' Boiling Over Growing Telangana Turmoil

By Ramesh Reddy / Hyderabad

Congress party has started weighing the advantages and disadvantages of taking a decision on the Telangana issue in the context of the 2014 general elections. The party’s strategists are of the view that both the TRS and the YSR Congress could be marginalized in the Telangana region with the decision.

If Telangana statehood is announced, the TRS would have no issue to go before the electorate. Its single point agenda was achieving Telangana.
With a decision announced on the statehood, TRS would not have anything to promise to the people. The Congress on the other hand could claim full credit for creating the state. It could even blame KCR and his party for creating chaos and making several youngsters lay down their lives, though Congress was all the time doing a serious exercise on the creation of Telangana.

Congress bosses are also hoping that merger of the TRS would be possible, once a decision on Telangana was taken. The party also hopes to wipe out the Jagan factor in the Telangana region through this decision. The YSR Congress is already weak in the region. Excepting a dozen or so, the party has no leaders in many districts. Congress hopes that there would be no migrations into the YSR Congress or TRS, once a decision on Telangana was taken. The YSR Congress could not so far organize the party at the ground level.

Though there are strong leaders like the Konda couple in Warangal district and Indra Karan Reddy in Adilabad district, even they are unable to organize the party, because of the chaotic conditions prevailing. Sajjala Rama Krishna Reddy who was a journalist all through his career was made in-charge of the Telangana region, because he happens to be the brother of Sajjala Diwakar Reddy, a business partner of Jagan.

Rama Krishna Reddy hails from the Kadapa district and has no knowledge about the Telangana terrain or its politics. Still he started interfering in the party matters in such a way that the Konda couple were hurt and had to create a scene of show down. Even after they met Jagan and reassured him of their continued support, the two have not been making any efforts to strengthen the party. All they are viewing at was getting party tickets to their followers. They might become active if they get assurance on it. This is also the case with Indra Karan Reddy.

Though the YSR Congress has good leaders like K K Mahender Reddy in Karimnagar and Bajireddy Govbardhan in Nizamabad, it is doubtful if they could make YSR Congress a strong political force to contend with other major parties like TRS, Congress and TDP. Congress leaders are of the view that the YSR Congress leaders are lacking enthusiasm as they are unable to understand when Jagan would come out. Because of the uncertainty, party leaders who used to liberally spend money on the party’s regular functioning, are no longer spending money as they are unsure of their own positions in the party. There is no one who can assure them of their future.

Now Congress party’s estimation is that the Jagan factor could be totally eliminated in the Telangana region, because of the decision on Telangana. Though KCR declared that he would not merge his party, Congress is still hopeful that merger would be possible once the decision on ‘T’ was taken and KCR assured of control of the party in the Telangana region. Though leaders like the deputy Chief Minister Damodara Raja Narasimha and minister Jana Reddy might oppose the merger plan as they do not want the domination of KCR, Congress hopes that this issue could be amicably resolved.
