The national capital has earned the dubious distinction of having the highest number of crimes reported among mega cities in the country. The highest number of complaints per 100 policemen was reported from Delhi (17.0) followed by Madhya Pradesh (14.7) and Chandigarh (10.1) against the national average of 3.7 during the year 2011.
According to latest statistics released by National Crime Records Bureau for 2012, Delhi accounted for 10.1 per cent crimes reported from 53 mega cities, which has a population of more than ten lakh.
The three other metros which follow Delhi are Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata -- accounting 6.4 per cent, 6.2 per cent and 5.4 per cent, respectively. It also noted that the highest rate of violent crimes was reported from Assam (54.2) followed by Manipur (44.6), Kerala (42.7) and Delhi (34.7) as compared to 22.7 at all-India level.
A total of 36,622 cases of crime against women were reported from 53 mega cities out of 2,44,270 cases reported in the country during 2012. The rate of crime in these cities at 47.76 (per ten lakh population) was comparatively higher as compared to national rate at 41.74. Among 53 mega cities, Delhi accounted for 14.2 per cent (5,194) of total such crimes followed by Bengaluru 6.2 per cent (2,263) and Kolkata 5.7 per cent (2,073).
For every one hour, 273 cases were reported in country and 373 persons were arrested under different IPC sections in 2012. For every one hour, 2.84 cases of rape were reported in country in which, on an average, 3.55 persons were arrested last year, the report said. A total of 24,923 rape cases were reported in the country last year, it said.
