Masakali takes message home to Bellary voters

By Shreya Reddy

Kabootar ja ja ja...and votes la la la. BJP candidate J Shanti has homed in on pigeons to carry her message to voters in the Bellary Lok Sabha constituency from where she is contesting.

Bellary BJP campaign committee member B K B N Murthy said the party hit on the innovative idea after a well-wisher donated 1,000 white carrier pigeons. ‘‘We open the cages in the morning and the pigeons take flight in a group. The sight of 1,000 white pigeons landing together in a village attracts a lot of people to the spot,’’ said Murthy. Each pigeon has the BJP’s symbol lotus on its head and in a locket tied to the claws.

Shanti is a political greenhorn backed by her powerful brotherminister B Sriramulu and the Reddy brothers, the mining barons of Bellary. With the Congress and JD(S) yet to announce their candidates for the constituency, the BJP has decided to stay a step ahead with a unique publicity drive.

Besides setting the pigeon among the voters, BJP is also resorting to a bit of magic. For instance, a blank photo frame is placed before voters and covered with a cloth. When uncovered, the frame transforms into portraits of Shanti. Next, the blueprint of a undeveloped village turns into a beautiful town the moment a BJP flag is planted on it. ‘‘We have 10 teams of magicians going around the constituency,’’ Murthy said.

The party is also relying on the tried and tested method of audio publicity material set to tunes from Hindi and Telugu films
