Special Report: MHA - A 'Ministry for Hounding Activists'?

By Kajol Singh in Delhi
The recent government crackdown on Greenpeace in particular, and the activism sector in general, reeks of arbitrariness and illegitimacy in a scathing critique, INNLIVE quotes. The question is will the people give in to the state’s tactics?

Civil society organisations are gearing up for possibly one of the most important struggles of resistance since the Emergency in the mid-1970s.

At stake are the democratic freedoms of speech, dissent and association, all guaranteed to us in one way or the other by the Constitution of India, and all threatened by a government that wants to brook no challenge to its agenda.

Focus: Is Your 'Blood Sample' Flowing Down The Lab Sink?

By Shashikant Gowda in Bangalore
EXCLUSIVE: The mal-administration, unnecessary tests, forced hospitalizations to meet the targets set for employed physicians, and the infamous but real ‘sink test’: the shocking realities in the private healthcare sector are many, as INNLIVE  finds out at a panel discussion on the issue. Is more regulation and vigil is the need of the hour?

According to a survey conducted by the World Health Organisation (WHO), six crore Indians fell below the poverty-line in 2010 due to their spending on healthcare. Another study in 2011 estimates that on average, 3.9 crore people in India descend into poverty each year under the burden of health expenses. “Health expenditures”, this paper states, “are responsible for more than half of Indian households falling into poverty.” Taking huge loans, or selling land-holdings and jewellery, while spending a lion’s share of savings is common practice among the masses.

By Sameera Samreen in Bhopal
Allah-hu-akbar.. its 3:45am and even though you want to snooze the alarm for another 10 minutes, you know you just have 25 minutes to wake up (both body and mind), brush, go to the kitchen to wolf on your food, take in your dose of caffeine, gulp down some water and brush again – before the day’s fast begins.

In between all this, your phone buzzes and you can’t help smile at the Whatsapp message from your mother reminding you to drink some milk so that you don’t feel thirsty during the day or roll your eyes at some funny food trolls doing rounds this Ramzan, like, “Ramzan mein kon bade? Dahi Wadeyy!!”

Focus: Price of 'Pulses' Crossed 100 Per Kilogram In India

By Kajol Singh in Delhi
In India, all pulses are pinching the pocket despite the significant hike in the minimum support price (MSP) of some varieties by up to Rs 275/quintal, which was aimed at boosting production.

Amid the supply crunch, retail prices of many pulses have crossed Rs 100/kg mark in major cities. Government agencies are yet to float the tender for import of pulses to check the rising prices.

Barring gram and masoor, all major varieties of pulses - including tur, urad and moong - are being sold at prices above Rs 100 per kg in the four metros due to lower production of key lentils during the last harvest.

Alert: The Sixth Mass Extinction On Earth Has Begun And Could Threaten Humanity's Existence, Scientists Warn

Earth is entering a mass extinction that threatens humanity's existence, researchers have declared.

A team of American scientists claim that their study shows 'without any significant doubt' that we are entering the sixth great mass extinction on Earth.

The study says that species are disappearing at a rate 100 times faster than would normally be expected - and that is a conservative estimate.

And such a catastrophic loss of animal species presents a real threat to human existence, the experts warn, as crucial ecosystem 'services' such as crop pollination by insects and water purification in wetlands is also put at risk.
