Make in India – Part I: Can Modi Make It Possible?

Virtually everyone agrees that India’s manufacturing sector has tremendous potential for the growth. India has a large, young population (1.25 billion people, over 800 million of whom are aged 35 years or less) whose income levels are low (Per-capita income stands at a modest $1,500 p.a.) – thus providing the industry with a large pool of inexpensive labour. However, manufacturing only accounts for a mere 15.1% of GDP currently.

PM Modi has vowed to change that through the ambitious ‘Make in India’ initiative. As part of this initiative, he has promised to cut out red-rape holding back the industry, make legal compliance easier, introduce online-applications for notoriously opaque government clearances and amend restrictive laws.

Exclusive: Loyal Congressman GK Vasan quits party after 14 years: Here's why Gandhis should be worried?

The first major fissure in the Congress has surfaced, with former minister GK Vasan all set to break away from the party to revive his father’s legacy and outfit, the Tamil Maanila Congress in Tamil Nadu. Vasan’s move may have its roots in the conviction of AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa who had to step down as chief minister thereby creating a politically fluid situation in which both the ruling party as well as the opposition DMK are in a state of flux.

"This has raised hopes in other parties and leaders who think they can create space for themselves in the state which was dominated by either the AIADMK or the DMK for close to half a century. This is the best opportunity to come their way. And this includes the BJP which is stands benefit the most from the situation in the state where it wants to set up its footprint," said a Congress leader.

For Clean India to work, country needs to solve its waste disposal problem

Instead of constructing new landfill sites, experts say the government should be looking into innovative methods to recycle waste.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious project to make India a clean country, aims to teach citizens to reduce and even clean their own waste. But first a matter of real urgency needs to be sorted out: India needs to increase landfill area, even as it looks into overhauling its municipal solid waste management system.

Sataire: Ekta Kapoor’s Pavitra Rishta is over, PM announces Rs.5000cr relief for those affected

In a commendable move by the central government, PM Modi has announced a relief package of Rs.5000 crore for the 5 crore men who were victims of domestic abuse by their wives’ inexorable longing of the long running Pavitra Rishta, a daily soap opera on Zee TV, playing since ancient times with a total of more than 1424 episodes.

The move, as usual was questioned by the self-proclaimed opposition party in Indian Parliament, Congress. “What about the victims of Qubool Hai?“,

Digvijay Singh questioned if there was an RSS hand behind it and if BJP is playing a communal card here too.

Kissa microphone ka: The public flogging of Robert Vadra is just absurd

Over the weekend, Robert Vadra, the former First Damaad, made big news for doing two things. One, he got pissy and pushed aside a journalist's microphone. Two, he attempted to force the journalist to delete the video footage of him doing the same.

That's what we call dumb and dumber. Needless to say, his actions instantly evoked whoops of appreciation from the television channels, which instantly went to town with this unexpected gift that arrived on a slow weekend.

The twitterati were no less eager to do their part toward the greater goal, i.e. making a Himalaya-sized brouhaha out of what was, at best, a termite mound of a PR flub. And right on cue, Congress party members on TV played their assigned role, which these days appears to be guided by that great anti-Hippocratic oath: Do every harm. They dutifully made everything worse by claiming first that Vadra was a "private citizen" and later that he ought not to be accosted in such an unseemly fashion at "private events."
