“My Father Would Beat Me, But My Mother Will Do Worse”

The Ministry of Women and Child Development released a study that laid out India’s struggles with child abuse in stark terms. “Child abuse is shrouded in secrecy and there is a conspiracy of silence around the entire subject,” the report, called ‘Study on Child Abuse’, reads. “Further, certain kinds of traditional practices that are accepted across the country, knowingly or un-knowingly amount to child abuse.”

While there are many stories that revolve around this secrecy, the future for abused children is bleak; however, it is not impossible with the existence of initiatives like Childline India Foundation, which functions as a national organization for awareness, advocacy and training on issues of child abuse.

Fast forward to Dubai and he now owns a gold retail conglomerate that is one of the biggest names in the industry and, in the midst of a challenging retail sector, has just announced multi-million-dollar expansion plans, is set to create 2,000 new jobs and is aiming to enter the hospitality sector.

Why 'Online Fraudulent Financial Attacks' Are Not Active?

Internet, as we know it, has conquered our lives and everything in it. Providing in-depth access to knowledge, satiating our curiosities and letting us voice our opinions, Internet is also responsible for fostering innovative minds. The result: Internet of Things and Net Neutrality have come to be the new tech buzzwords.

With Internet of Things, the daily physical objects like watches, washing machines, refrigerators, etc. now come to enjoy network connectivity to send and receive data. Net neutrality, on the other hand determines free and unobstructed access to various apps and websites on internet enabled smartphones and computer systems.

Focus: Women Are Being Illegally Detained In Shelter Homes For Falling In Love, Yet Nobody’s Being Punished

The police routinely order ‘protective custody’ of women against their will, but action is never taken against erring officers, or magistrates.

For one month, a school teacher from Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district was forcibly detained in a women’s shelter home, forbidden from stepping out, meeting people or going to work, all on police orders. Her crime? The woman, Kanchan Verma, wanted to live with her Muslim boyfriend, against the wishes of her parents.

Misplaced Priorities, The Burden Of Expectations And Social Challenges Mark Modi's Second Year As PM

Last year, India saw an overwhelming victory for the BJP and Narendra Modi, who nearly single-handedly ran the high-pitched parliamentary election campaign. Mr. Modi was sworn in on 26 May last year, as the 15th Prime Minister of India, in a high-profile event, the type of which has now become trademark of everything that the leader does.

A year down the line, "report cards" are flying thick and fast, often with vastly differing assessments.

Focus: Why Shaadi.com’s 'Dowry Calculator' Is A Big Hit?

Was shaadi.com openly promoting dowry? Had they really not heard of dowry deaths? But it seems we needed to hold the disgust and dish out the praise instead, because when you logged on to the Dowry Calculator it was the perfect answer to the good folk who believe that their wives are chattel - and others who believe the same about their daughters.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, the cases of reported dowry deaths in 2013 were 8083. There were 10,709 reported cases of dowry registered under the The Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.

India's Most Wanted Man: Fully Paralysed And Immovable!

May 9, 2015, marks one year since Dr G.N. Saibaba, lecturer of English at Ramlal Anand College, Delhi University, was abducted by unknown men on his way home from work.

The 'Real Story' Behind The 'Fake' Hubli Terror Conspiracy

Seventeen Muslim youths, some medical and engineering students, were recently acquitted by a Hubli court of terror charges. But how did they get accused in the first place?

Conspiracy cases always make for multiple narratives and the so-called Hubli conspiracy case typifies this axiom. After seven long years, the case was thrown out last month by a trial court in Hubli and all the 17 accused were acquitted.

Girls and young women, mostly from Jharkhand, are fodder to this illicit business. They are brought to the national Capital on the pretext of being employed as helps, then raped and sexually assaulted by the unscrupulous owners and employees of placement agencies and forced to bear babies. Exclusive: Nepal Launches Inquiry Over 'Pakistan Quake Relief Aid' Contains 'Beef Masala' To A Hindu Country Where 'Beef Is Banned' And 'Strict Rules' Followed

After experiencing major devastation and loss of life in the April 25 earthquake, Nepal was left with an unsavoury taste in its mouth after receiving packets of 'beef masala' as part of the relief package from Pakistan. Since the majority-Hindu country treats cows as sacred and there is a blanket ban on slaughtering the animal, the development has the potential to trigger diplomatic acrimony.

After experiencing major devastation and loss of life in the April 25 earthquake, Nepal was left with an unsavoury taste in its mouth after receiving packets of ‘beef masala’ as part of the relief package from Pakistan.

Investigation: Who Is Benefiting From The 'Lucrative' Andhra Pradesh 'Red Sandalwood' Smuggling Trade?

In red sandalwood smuggling and encounter, the Andhra Pradesh state has cracked down on the footsoldiers of the business. But who are the kingpins?

Lingaraj peered through his open doorway, checking for spies. “Is a tree worth more than a human life?” he whispered after seeing that no one was around to eavesdrop. Outside, livestock ambled over dirt lanes and the midday air was thick with the smell of boiling rice. The Andhra Pradesh village of Devarakonda seemed like any other at first, but it lacked the unhurried manner of the countryside.

My Column: Have We Pushed Nature To Unleash Its Fury?

Delicate, sensitive yet all enduring and reliable, we have really pushed the earth's tolerance to a limit where it may no longer be able to bear the weight of the human race.

Over the course of my lifetime, I have travelled to several countries and cities, visited five continents and crossed the International Date Line and the equator. So what have I seen and noticed?

During most of these visits, I was a part of some delegation or the other, so my views were often based on snippets seen on the side of the show. Clearly, citizens of some countries are well off and some badly off.

A New Cincept Of 'Prison Restaurant' With 'Jail Delicacies'!

In this age of food glut and food writing, INNLIVE explores the concept of prison food delicacies.

Don’t you agree the era of Food had dawned, ushering in Bhojan Yug? We may no doubt be a poor, underdeveloped nation not reaching our upper calories limits with a large percentage of the population suffering from malnutrition. Let us forget that. We have to focus on gourmet cuisine and the proliferation of culinary experts and seven-star chefs who on TV screens clean, cook and present hundreds of delicacies from different parts of the country.

'Sale' Of Babies Exposes India's Difficult Adoption Laws

A baby girl for as little as Rs 5,000, twin girls offered at cut price — these are just some of the awful realities unearthed by a television channel in Nalgonda district in Telangana recently.

The programme showed just how easy it is to buy a girl child. The women who sell their children to touts are invariably poor and unaware of the magnitude of the crime.

One reason for the sale of babies in India is the difficulties people face in adopting.

Focus: How To Get Your Kids To Sit Through The Sex Talk?

It’s not clear who dreads the Sex Talk more, parents or children. Parents know that it’s important to impart their values and arm kids with knowledge, but they don’t know how to approach the subject or how much to say.

Although they know it’s irrational, parents want to think that their kids will wait until their wedding nights to have sex, or at least until they are 30. (The truth is that 7 out of 10 Americans become sexually active before the age of 19.) All children would like to believe that they are the product of immaculate conception.
