Another Feather In The Cap Of Hyderabad's 'Sunshine Hospitals' Performs Rare Joint Replacement Surgery

SPONSORED: When 58-year-old Madhu has developed a severe pain in multiple joints of her body, she had no clue what was in store for her. She developed severe arthritis of hip and knee joints. The excruciating pain virtually crippled her and she was unable to attend her daily chores, impacting the quality of her life.

She was diagnosed with a rare ailment (one in 10,000 suffer from this) of musculo skeletal disorder known as Systemic Lupus Erythematosis  (SLE). SLE is an immune disorder, wherein the faulty immune system instead of safeguarding the body tissue and parts, will inflict damage to them.

It often harms the heart, blood, vessels, liver, kidneys, nervous system, lungs, joints, skin and other body parts.

In Madhu’s case it was an affliction of the hip and knee joint. A team of orthopaedic specialists at Sunshine Hospitals led by its managing director and chief joint replacement Surgeon, Dr  AV  Guruva Reddy, treated her through multiple surgeries including hip and knee replacements. After the treatment, the patient is now back to normal.

‘’A patient presenting with an ailment like SLE was a rare phenomenon, therefore it was vital that the problem was diagnosed correctly to treat appropriately. We have the expertise and are equipped to treat such complicated and rare ailments with excellent results,” Gurava Reddy said.

Initially, the bilateral total hip replacement was performed with uncemented prosthesis. This relieved the patient from the pain in the hips. Subsequently bilateral total knee replacement was performed on her as her knee joints were completely damaged due to SLE antibodies.
