More Skeletons Found In Two UP Districts: Parts Of Over 300 Skeletons Recovered From Bahraich And Gorakhpur

The skeleton mystery is back to haunt Uttar Pradesh. Even before the police and administration of Unnao could come up with an answer regarding the recovery of human skeletons in the police line, similar recoveries in Bahraich and Gorakhpur districts have yet again raised eyebrows.

Parts of more than 300 skeletons and viscera were recovered from a secluded room in the reserve police line of Behraich.

Although none of the officials came on record to gave a clarification, sources informed that the room in the police line is a store of skeletons and viscera related to cases as many as three decades old.

The room, which is in a deplorable condition, was cordoned off and was covered using plastic sheets.

A similar recovery was also reported from Gorakhpur.

According to reports, the old postmortem house, which was operational till 2006 on the railway station road, was shifted to the medical college in the district in the same year.

Ever since, the old campus was deserted and the body parts and viscera that were case property lied in the storage room unprotected.

The matter came to light on Saturday after some media persons reached the old campus to get an account of the situation.

“On reaching there, we saw that the door was broken and some stray dogs were searching for food in the samples and body parts.

"When we questioned police officials, we were chased away from there and the area was cordoned off,” said a local journalist wishing anonymity.
Meanwhile, the police and administrative officials of all the three districts—Unnao, Gorakhpur and Behraich—preferred not to go on record on the developments.

A few days ago, more than 200 skeletons and viscera were recovered from a room of the reserve police line in Unnao, which is barely 60 km from Lucknow, following which a high-level enquiry was ordered.

The police had said there was a hospital in the same building a few years ago and the room where the skeletons were found was used to conduct postmortems.

Taking serious note of the revelation, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had sought a detailed report from the state government.

Questions
“The matter is being probed,” a senior health department official of the state government said.

While the recovery raised serious questions over the way unclaimed bodies had been disposed, sources said police failed to provide adequate documents.
