Close on the heels of Rajkumar Hirani’s PK kicking up a storm in the right wing circle, a Telugu remake of Oh My God, Gopala Gopala, has Hindu groups fuming. Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samiti (BGUS), organizers of Ganesh Chaturthi festivities in Hyderabad, and Vishwa Hindu Parishad have taken objection to the manner in which Lord Krishna and other Hindu gods have been depicted in the film starring popular heroes Venkatesh and Pawan Kalyan.
Meanwhile, a representative of Telugu film star Pawan Kalyan’s Fans Association sustained injuries after an unidentified person allegedly attacked him for failing to obtain entry tickets to the audio launch event of the actor’s film, police said. The incident happened outside a hall in Madhapur area where the audio launch of Telugu film was being held, informed Madhapur police station Inspector K Narsimulu. Coming back to the controversy, both BGUS and VHP on Thursday lodged a complaint with Censor Board stating that the ‘uncharitable’ portrayal of Hindu gods in the Telugu movie would trigger religious tensions in society.
In the complaint, both the groups have emphasized that such insensitive portrayal of revered deities would hurt the religious sentiments of the majority community and may lead to communal disharmony. The outfit has based its complaint on content of the teaser though the film is yet to be completed.
Gopala Gopala is said to be influenced by 2012 Bollywood film, Oh My God, starring Paresh Rawal and Akshay Kumar. Aamir Khan-starrer PK created a lot of controversy recently for its content with BJP leader Subramanian Swamy questioning the source of the funding for the film.
