Personal vendetta, love affairs and property disputes are the other top reasons.
In an age in which India has sent a mission to Mars, witchcraft is still among the top 11 motives for murder in the nation, according to National Crime Records Bureau data for 2013.
Last year, the data says, there were 33,201 murders and another 3,380 cases of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Personal vendetta, love affairs and property disputes were the top reasons for the murders. Witchcraft was the motive for 160 deaths. In the last decade, 32,000-34,000 people on average were murdered every year.
Revenge killing
Personal vendetta and family feuds were the top motive for murders in 2013, causing a total of 3,413 deaths. Uttar Pradesh (855) had the most of these killings, followed by Andhra Pradesh (445), Maharashtra (380) and Bihar (254).
Love affairs
Betrayal in love was the second-most common murder motive. Between 2001 and 2013, Andhra Pradesh (4,901 murders), Uttar Pradesh (4,200) and Bihar (3,982) formed the top three states in this category.
Property rows
The crime data showed that 6,882 cases of property disputes were registered in 2013 alone. Murders over such disputes were most common in Bihar. In 2013, property disputes claimed 822 lives. In 2012, the figure was 1,159.
Dowry deaths
A total of 504 dowry deaths put Andhra Pradesh on top of this category. Following it was Assam (140 murders), Punjab (118), Chhattisgarh (101) and Rajasthan (93).
