‘Evolution Of Bollywood Music’ Goes Viral On Social Media

By Vinay Rai | INNLIVE

Bollywood lovers, unite. Penn Masala, the world’s first and most famous Hindi a cappella group, has a treat for you: a music video that travels through more than 60 years of Bollywood hits.
“Bollywood music has changed immensely over the decades,” says a statement accompanying the video. “We’ve seen legendary singers redefine genres, musical directors pushing the envelope with their arrangements, and the arts and culture of India thrive.”

The five-minute video begins with a song from the 1949 film, “Dulari” and ends with hits from the 2013 film, “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.”The first segment is filmed in black and white, with the six singers clad in suits, ties and bowler hats.

As the decades pass, the black and white video fades to sepia , and ends in color. And the outfits change as well. In the 1960s, the group dons bandanas and jean jackets; in the 1980s, rugby shirts; in the 2010s, casual suits and rolled-up sleeves.

Since its launch on March 29, the video has been viewed more than 900,000 times.

Founded in 1996 at the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Masala is known for its fusion of sounds and songs from South Asia and the West. The group has eight full-length studio albums. They have performed for audiences across the globe, including billionaire Mukesh Ambani, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and U.S. President Barack Obama.
