EXCLUSIVE Naming children after Bollywood stars is a common practice in India. Little wonder then that there are several Amitabh Bachchans in their mid 30s and 20s on the electoral rolls this year and several Shah Rukhs and Salmans who are now teenagers.
However, oddly, voters are also named after Bollywood characters. According to the EC website it seems that the entire cast of Sholay — the 1975 cult film -- is listed in the data from 24 states.
So in this year's Lok Sabha elections there are almost 7040 Gabbar Singhs on the electoral rolls, out of which 45 Gabbar Singhs' father's name is Hari Singh just like it was in the film. There are also two Surma Bhopalis who are enlisted.
While there are several Jai, Veeru and Basanti on the list, there is one person who is enrolled under the name Mr India. There are around 5000 people named Robot and 160 named Anthony Gonsalves.
While there are 30 Shah Rukh Khans on the list, one person on the electoral rolls is also called Hrithik Roshan, although he spells his name differently from the actor. There are 450 people who have been named Amitabh Bachchan. Unfortunately, there isn't any Mogambo who will be happy casting his vote this year.
