A Tale Of TMC And AIADMK Pact: The Hard Poll Bargainers

By Mahesh Mahtolia | Delhi

CLOSE LOOK Elections to 16th Lok Sabha are just started of phase one in Assam and Tripura. In later of this month it will make an impact and grip the poll fever across the country. These elections will decide the political careers of many stalwarts and will signal the end of many others. Many regional parties see this as their chance to cash in and make most of the situation.

It is these small parties who are bargaining with the large national parties - Congress and BJP. Most are seeking seat sharing arrangements which will only benefit them locally. They usually lack any national perspective or agenda.

It is in such a scenario that parties such as TMC and AIADMK are looking towards Delhi.
Mamata Banerjee and Jayalalitha, having made sure of their quota of winnable seats in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu are in talks with major parties to ensure they call the shots in the next government.

It is well known Mamata stubbornly stood in the way of reforms in the UPA government. Moreover she continues to be against FDI even in key sectors. She was a part of both Vajpayee and Manmohan governments and ensured that both remained shackled. Her strident opposition to Tata's attempt to industrialise West Bengal remains firmly etched in memory.

That West Bengal lost out on much needed development is a fact and the gains went to Gujarat instead. That she did not care for her own state, how do we expect her to serve the nation?  Merely a show of simple living, wearing simple clothes and slippers means nothing if she has caused losses worth thousands of crores to the state.

Jayalalitha is another fish from the same kettle. She simply refuses to change her ways. She too pretends to be a damsel in distress when it is a fact that she has cunningly felled governments at the Centre owing to her unpredictable ways and untrustworthy politics.

That she is a ruthless manipulator is known. This time her aim is for Delhi. Looking thirstily at a undecided post -poll scenario, she is not declaring her cards, and is willing to making a deal later when the government would beg for her support.

We can expect nothing good from these women politicians. The country will suffer for their misdeeds. That their own states are suffering their autocratic nepotist rule. The country can simply not afford to let them have any say in national matters, as for them, national issues are no more than personal issues.

BJP is looking good and should end up with more than 200 seats easily. With support from allies such as Akali Dal, Shiv Sena and TDP, it should make the majority mark without help from treacherous parties such as TMC and AIADMK.

Congress seems destined for a never-before rout. A severe thrashing at the hustings is in store. Enough of a miserable puppet government, with neither the guts nor will to govern. As is being said in BJP ads, public will not forgive them. They must be looking to heavens to save them, but this time nobody will come their help.
