Surprised! yes, Delhi police has fetched another feather in their cap, by declaring their sub-inspector's private number as Delhi police foreign national helpline official number.
The Delhi Police today launched a helpline for foreign nationals visiting the national capital. The number, 8750871111, will become active from Friday onwards.
The number currently belongs to a sub-inspector who has been asked to surrender it by tonight. According to the police, a set of officers has been assigned to handle the phone calls on this number and it will be monitored by Mukesh Kumar Meena, the Joint Commissioner of New Delhi range.
The issue of helpline for foreign nationals was brought to the fore after a widely criticised raid led by Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti at Khirki extention in south Delhi last month that led to Ugandan women complaining to the police about harassment and racism.
The Aam Aadmi Party, which formed the government in Delhi last month, has defended Mr Bharti. On Wednesday, AAP leaders staged a protest in Delhi in support of Ugandan women who alleged that they were forced into a drug and sex racket, which the party says vindicates its Law Minister Somnath Bharti's controversial raid.
Last month, a 51-year-old Danish woman was allegedly beaten, robbed and gang-raped in Connaught Place or CP in the heart of the capital, when she lost the way back to her hotel.
The woman, who later flew out of the country, told the police in a statement that she had sought directions from a group of men to her hotel in nearby Paharganj, when they attacked her. She alleged that they took her to an isolated area, where eight men raped her.
The Aam Aadmi Party has, however, assured the foreign nationals living in Delhi that they are safe.
