INDIAN CRICKET The Indian team is definitely going through a transition phase after the retirements of senior players. But the youngsters with lot of domestic experience behind them have settled down and so far all is well.
Amidst all this, one player is toiling hard at the domestic level for a comeback. Virender Sehwag, a veteran of 104 Test and 251 ODIs, played last for India in March last year. He was dropped from the side due to poor run of form after the four-match Test series against Australia at home.
His performance playing for Delhi in the ongoing Ranji Trophy has also not been impressive. From 13 innings, Sehwag's average has been 19.50 and highest score being 56 in this season.
Will Sehwag call it quits? or keep on fighting with the hope of making a return to the Indian team? For a sportsman, it's not an easy decision to make and their is always something inside him that tells, "You are not over, stay strong".
Sports has always been dotted with stories of great comebacks, but in case of Sehwag things look difficult. He is 35 now and the selectors are already looking forward and they made it clear by dropping Sehwag from BCCI's central contract in November.
Moreover, it is not easy for a player of Sehwag's stature to play at the domestic level to prove his worth. He has never been a technically correct batsman, but had the gift of supreme hand-eye coordination. Sehwag was often criticised for his less footwork, flashing at deliveries away from his body and despite all these shortcomings he succeeded with triple tons in Test and a double hundred in ODI.
India are back from South Africa and will be touring New Zealand this month with no Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh. Like Sehwag, the other two senior players were also axed and won't board the flight to New Zealand. However, Gambhir and Yuvraj have the age factor on their side.
Will Sehwag retire soon? The decision should always be Sehwag's and not a forced one, he has earned it.
