The 65th Republic Day was celebrated on Sunday across the country amid tight security and hoisting of the National Tricolour in different states.
West Bengal: In Kolkata Governor M K Narayanan presided over the marchpast of armed and police forces. Colourful parade and procession with decorated tableaux portraying the state’s culture and heritage were highlights of the programme, which was attended by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Assam: Assam Governor Janaki Ballav Patnaik today appealed the underground militant groups to abjure violence and come to the discussion table to solve the issues for an overall development of the state. Hoisting the National Flag on the 65th Republic Day here, Patnaik also condemned the recent incidents of violence in many districts across the state. Besides, various initiatives were started under the Multi Sectoral Development Plan in areas like agriculture, cottage industry, drinking water and education to uplift the minority communities.
Jharkhand: Outlining his government’s achievements and priorities while unfurling the tri-colour, Chief Minister Hemant Soren said four lakh youths were being imparted skill training to make them eligible for several kinds of jobs. Announcing that 30 inmates of various jails would be freed under a special initiative, Soren said legal help was being provided to poor and tribal inmates, who were in jails for petty crimes, to free them as their absence had disrupted the lives of their families.
Rajasthan: Eighteen police officers and other personnel were felicitated by Rajasthan Governor Margaret Alva. Eight other government employees were also awarded meritorious certificates. After the award distribution, over 1000 school students and 150 folk artists enthralled people in the stadium with their colourful dance performances.
Madhya Pradesh: The R-Day celebrations were held at the Lal Parade ground here where Governor Ram Naresh Yadav unfurled the national flag and took the salute at a march past of various forces. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan unfurled the national flag at Vidisha where he recounted the steps taken for development by the state in the last 10 years. Tableaux showing development undertaken by various government departments were also taken out at the Lal Parade ground.
Arunachal Pradesh: Unfurling the national flag here on Republic Day, Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma exhorted the people to root out corruption and criminal activities from the state. In his maiden address to the people, the Governor urged the youths and their mentors to ensure that the energy of the youth was not diverted towards disruption.
Kerala: Governor Nikhil Kumar wanted the government to explore the possibility of PPP model for the state’s economic growth. Referring to the apprehensions of people living in high range areas over the Gagdil-Kasturirangan report on Western Ghats preservation, he said, “It is good that the state government is determined to ensure that legitimate interests and legal rights of the people there are protected”. Platoons from Army, Air Force, Central Reserve Police Force, Railway Protection Force, Special Armed Force, Trivandrum City Armed Reserve Police, Kerala Prison Department, Kerala Fire and Rescue Force, were among those which took part in the parade.
Goa: Corruption and the Canacona building collapse incident dominated Goa Governor B V Wanchoo’s speech on the occasion of Republic Day. Addressing the parade, the Governor referred to the January 4 incident in which over 30 people died after a five-storey building caved in at Canacona town.
Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah unfurling the national flag and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa giving away annual awards to police personnel and civilians. Cultural events such as folk dances from Tamil Nadu, Manipur and Gujarat were also presented by college students and others with the Marina stretch being decked up for the special occasion. The parade was commanded by Wing Commander Kamal Singh Obad. Among the tableaux presented by the defence forces were Arjun and T-72 battle tanks.
Andaman and Nicobar: Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lt Gen (Retd) AK Singh urged the people of the Union Territory to take part in the government’s development programmes. Greeting the islanders on the 65th Republic Day, Singh urged them to dedicate themselves to the cause of freedom, unity and solidarity. He payed homage to the freedom fighters and martyrs who made the supreme sacrifice to safeguard the country.
Punjab/ Haryana: Contingents of police, Home Guards, NCC and school children, among others, participated in the parades held at several district headquarters in the two states and their joint capital Chandigarh. The celebrations at most places in the region were held under foggy conditions. Punjab Governor Shivraj V Patil and Haryana Governor Jagannath Pahadia unfurled the tri-colour at Patiala and Gurgaon respectively, while Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his Haryana counterpart Bhupinder Singh Hooda took salute at Ludhiana and Nuh respectively.
Puducherry: Lt Governor Virendra Kataria unfurled the tricolour and inspected a guard of honour presented by the Puducherry Armed police, leading the Union Territory in celebration of the 65th Republic Day. He presented President`s police medals for meritorious services to various police personnel. In a message released on the occasion, he said Puducherry encouraged establishment of eco-friendly industries units consuming less water and power by entrepreneurs.
Bihar: Several innovative steps for good governance and a “zero tolerance” policy towards corruption have been taken in Bihar, which has recorded highest growth rate of 14.48 percent in the country, Governor D Y Patil said in his Republic Day address. Addressing the Republic Day function at the Gandhi Maidan here, the Governor said, “Today, an environment of communal and social harmony is existing in Bihar.”
