By Raima Shagun | Srinagar

Battling rats’ invasion, Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) has invited tenders from the reputed companies and firms to get rid of the rodents.

SKIMS will be paying Rs 8.80 lakh per annum to the firm for taking “sufficient steps for controlling the menace of rodents and cats besides other pest control management” in the hospital.

“Earlier we had a contract with a person for eradicating the rodents. This man was catching majority of the rodents. And the rest were fleeing. Since the contract stands expired and therefore we have invited fresh tenders,” Dr Aijaz Mustafa, superintendent of SKIMS, told INN Live.
One of the biggest super specialty hospitals of Jammu and Kashmir, the 700-bed SKIMS treats around five lakh patients annually in its outpatient department. Around 1,500 patients visit the OPD for consultations every day. Around 150 patients are admitted every day in the hospital. And nearly 150 patients are discharged from the hospital after treatment every day.

The rodents have been posing serious threat to the patient care in the hospital. Sources said the rats have been snapping electric wires and other emergency care system in the hospital.

What is more alarming is that these rodents are posing threat to the lives of the kids and serious patients who become the sitting ducks for these creatures. Plus there is always a lurking threat of epidemic given their access to stores and kitchens of the hospital.

“Even if there are only 10 rodents, it is a problem. It is a huge complex. You have hostels, kitchens, staff canteen and other things. We want eradication of these rodents. Naturally no body would like to have rodents in kitchens”, said Dr Mustafa.

Doctors said the administration is taking all possible preventive measures to keep the rodents and cats at bay in the hospital complex.
