Can The 'New Gandhi' Revive Grand Old Party’s Fortunes?

By Priya Shergill / INN Live

Born to India’s “first family”, it is but a cinch that Rahul Gandhi would join political, minus the rough and tumble. With a legacy that extends from Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of independent India, to his grandmother late prime minister Indira Gandhi and his father late former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, expectation ride high on heir apparent Rahul Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi announced his entry into politics in March 2004. He quickly jumped into the electoral fray by contesting from Amethi, his father’s erstwhile constituency, in the May 2004 elections.
The newest Gandhi on the block was appointed as the general secretary of the All India Congress Committee in 2007. In the same reshuffle, he was also made in-charge of the Indian Youth Congress and the National Students Union of India.

For the 2014 General Elections, Rahul Gandhi is adapting the strategy that the Congress used during the 2004 campaign which propelled it back to power. Following the strategy , the youngest Gandhi has planned to focus on the votes of rural India and weaker sections of society, which have been traditional supporters of his party.

During the campaign  for the Rajasthan Assembly election, in a bid to connect with the people present, Rahul Gandhi chose to share emotional  moments in his own life by mentioning the assassinations of his grandmother and father.

“My grandmother was murdered. My father was murdered. Now I may also be killed one day. I don’t care about it,” said Rahul Gandhi, Congress Vice President.

In Churu, Rajasthan, he attacked Bhartiya Janata Party, by accusing the saffron party of fanning communal flames.

During his Gujarat tour, Rahul Gandhi visited Mahatma Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram.

“It’s always an honour for me to come to the ashram. I am a follower of Gandhi and his ideas. Thank you,” wrote Rahul Gandhi in the visitor’s book of the Asharam.

The Congress vice-president has now fully set on a journey Rahul’s father, who he considers as his hero, planned for him.

“There is a work that my father had started, a dream that he had dreamt. I come to you today saying… allow me to turn that dream into reality,” he posted on his Facebook Page.

Rahul Gandhi has always been portrayed a shy and reticent politician it was always thought that Priyanka Gandhi, his sister will step over and take the charge after the assassination of their father. But, surprising the rank and file of the party, Rahul took over the reins.

It is often said that it is Rahul Gandhi’s birthright to contest for the position of Prime Minister, as he belongs to a Nehru-Gandhi family. Since, Sonia Gandhi has declined to accept the post, her son made sure to step in for her to be the next member of the reign.

Will the campaign by Rahul Gandhi reach another milestone –  a hat trick? Many would agree that Gandhi needs a better campaign pitch than Narendra Modi if they expectation is to get rural votes.

I want Rahul to take a larger role and prepare the Congress for the 2014 general elections as our leader; I do not want him to join the government,” said Digvijaya Singh, a member of Congress party.
