Convicted and sentenced to 42 months in jail for illegal possession of arms, actor Sanjay Dutt today left Pune’s Yerawada jail after being granted parole for two weeks in order to receive medical treatment. The actor was granted parole in order to receive medical treatment for his leg.
The actor was convicted and sentenced for the illegal possession of guns in the 1993 serial blasts case. His curative petition against the Supreme Court verdict had also been dismissed by the court.
The actor left from the Pune jail early this morning and was headed to Mumbai where he is to undergo treatment.
Dutt was last in the news when he was set to perform in a play along with fellow inmates at Pune’s Balandharva auditorium.
However, the play was inexplicably postponed despite the fact that it was to be be attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Home Minister RR Patil.
On an earlier occasion, Dutt had undergone a medical check-up at a Pune hospital. However, jail authorities had refused to divulge the reason for the check-up and the ailment the actor was suffering from.
Dutt was convicted by the Tada court for illegal possession of a 9 mm pistol and an AK-56 rifle which were part of a consignment of weapons and explosives brought to India for coordinated serial blasts in Mumbai that killed 257 people and injured over 700 in 1993.
