650 letters so far in a unique initiative to pay tribute to the Father of the Nation. "Gandhiji, Mahatma Gandhi Road, Bangalore - 1." That's going to be the new address of the Father of the Nation for a month.
The inauguration of a new postbox at the landmark Bangalore road is being celebrated in the IT City with a novel idea: all the letters that go into the red box for a month will be addressed to the Mahatma.
Volunteers stand by the red box, postcards in hand, asking the visitors to post their messages for the Mahatma. And the letters have been pouring - over 650 at the last count.
Surekha, curator of the city-based Rangoli Metro Art Centre, who conceived the project, admits she had not anticipated the overwhelming response the idea received.
"We decided the first letter into the post box on Mahatma Gandhi Road should go to Gandhiji. The letters are being addressed to Gandhiji, MG Road, Bangalore - 1. Gandhi is not just a person here but also a concept or idea. It is somehow triggering a lot of interest in people," she says.
The youngsters in the city have shown the most interest. "Gandhiji, I want to meet you, will you meet me?", "Dear Mahatma Gandhiji, I love you. You are the best in the world" were some of the letters posted by them, with some even drawing pictures along with their messages.
"I like his message. His way of living was very simple. I want to tell him, I love you Gandhiji," says K Gubendhiran.
Jacob Joy adds, "I wanted to tell him about the present situation of India. It is not the same, the changes in government. They are careless."
In the beginning of November, all the letters sent to the Mahatma will be put on display at the Rangoli Metro Art Centre.
