By Sumati Sharma / Hyderabad

Cycling, swimming and running enthusiasts, are preparing to test their endurance level at the Hyderabad Triathlon organised by the Great Hyderabad Adventure Club (GHAC) on October 20. It is open for people of all ages.

Representatives of the sport said that the event is a test of strength, stamina, endurance and pushing one’s limits. “The triathlon is more about participation, endurance and finishing than winning,” said Suresh Kochattil, co-organiser of GHAC. Speaking about the significance of the event, event director, Deepam Morparia, said that a city which is known for its laid-back attitude is going to spearhead triathlon with a large number of participants with around 40 per cent of them being from outside.
The event which starts from 6 a.m. in the morning and ends late in the evening will be conducted primarily outside GMC Balayogi Stadium, Gachibowli.

The sporting event includes three events-Traithlon, Team and Duathlon challenge. In triathlon and team challenge, participants will have to take part in swimming, cycling and running across varying distances, and in the duathlon challenge running and cycling is included. In this year’s event, the organisers are introducing a half iron championship, where participants will have to swim for 1.9 km, cycle for 90 km and run for 21.1 km.

Elaborating on the difficulty level of the half iron championship, Suresh said that they select participants for the category after interviewing them about their past experience in the competitions. “Some participants give up in the middle, some collapse and some complete the race,” said Suresh.

Apart form the above mentioned categories, a special Para Triathlon Olympic Relay is being organised for the specially-abled athletes, where participants will be taking part in cycling, running and swimming.

Though the registrations for the half iron and olympic category is over, registrations for other categories will be open till October 19 and option of spot registration will also be open. Deepam estimated that around 500 people will participate in the event. The winners will be awarded with a certificate and a medal.
