CHENNAI, ONE OF THE GREENIEST METROS OF INDIA

By CJ Nirmala Pelliyar in Chennai

Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu is an ecologically developed place where Green is considered to be a contemporary fashion and is thus promoted by all. Through the years, there has been a collective effort to turn Chennai into one of the greenest metropolitans in India. Bearing a massive coastline with the Bay of Bengal, this city is a mix of business, culture, education, finance, social intermixing and ecological awareness.

The specialty of the city can be determined with the titles of “sixth most populous city in India”, “fourth most populous metropolitan area in the country” and of course, the land of BPOs and IT firms functioning in 24x7 environments. This city is prone to a number of earthquakes, yet the humid climate ensures presence of immense greenery. The Green appeal of the city together with the lifestyle of a metro is what draws thousands of visitors to this place. The major areas that display the greenery of this place include:

The Airport
The very first steps into this metropolitan area are marked with a green entrance. The Airport of Chennai is an epitome of the ecological preservation that the city undertakes. This airport comprises two massive gardens encapsulating a total area of 1 acre. The parking of this sustainably designed place has a green roof and the gates are also “Green.” Further green expansion is being planned in accordance with the buildings being constructed.

The National Parks
Chennai is amongst the few cities round the globe that accommodate a large national park named “GUINDY NATIONAL PARK” within its bordered premise. Of the total area of the city, almost 4.5% has been dedicated to trees and greenery. The Green area of Chennai is subdivided into 7 large zones thereby accommodating around 260 parks. Maintenance of such massive parks and green zones is quite difficult but there are continuous efforts undertaken to improve the condition. Although this metro encompasses of a large green arena covered with plants, the population of this city has been increasing at a massive pace thereby reducing the per capita green area to .041 sq. meters which is the least amongst all the metro cities in India.

The Government seems to be addressing this issue quite flawlessly and there are eight green development zones identified in the area. The areas for development of 265 different green locations have been planned. The recent largest development of Chennai is the Tholkappia Poonga which is a national park designed to preserve the ecology of the Adyar Estuary. There is also a botanical garden named Semmozhi Poonga comprising 20 acres of green space.

The Beaches
The coastline of this beautiful Green place stretches for over 19 Km. and comprises of a number of beaches that the travelers enjoy to visit. These beaches are not just profound with the beauty of various international destinations but are also ecologically rich. The beautiful waters reaching the shores and a chain of green trees at some distance is the scenery that most of the beaches depict. Marina Beach, proudly titled as the 2nd largest urban beach in the world shares a beautiful shoreline between the Cooum and Adyar deltas. Elliot`s Beach is another green and clean place that lies at the southern end of the Adyar delta.
