Soon after the accused in Parliament attack Afzal Guru was hanged on February 9, the terrorist groups operating from Pakistan vowed that his death will be avenged. Similar vows were made soon after the hanging of Ajmal Kasab, a terrorist, caught alive after the 26/11 terror strikes in Mumbai.
The reports of a warnings that they would strike at Hyderabad were also published after Kasab’s hanging in newspapers and similar reports were aired in news channels also.
In the concerted terror attack, at least 18 people were killed and more than 50 others injured, many of them seriously, in the twin blasts that rocked the busy commercial Dilsukhnagar area in Hyderabad on Thursday evening. The toll is likely to rise as the intensity of the blasts, which took place around 7 p.m., were very severe and the sound was heard at Chaitanyapuri, which is nearly half a km away from the scene.
According to preliminary information, the explosives were said to have been kept in a tiffin box on two cycles. At least four two wheelers were destroyed in the incident.
Thursday being a working day, employees and students were returning to their homes and fell victims to the blasts. Thursday being an auspicious day, the place was also crowded as people were either on their way or returning from the Sai Baba temple. Heart rending scenes were witnessed as the bodies strewn away within a radius of 50 yards with pieces of human flesh all around and the injured were seen writhing in pain.
The police, who reached the spot along with forensic experts, bomb disposal squad and dog squad rushed to the spot immediately and with the help of people, shifted the injured to various hospitals in the area.
Panicked at the deafening sound of the blasts, people ran helter skelter resulting in stampede and injuries to many people.
This is the second time blasts have taken place in the area, the first one being near the famed Sai Baba temple at Dilsukhnagar more than a decade ago. The police also recovered an unexploded bomb in Dilsukhnagar, which was kept in a bag in an abandoned two wheeler on the same day blasts.
Union Home Minister S K Shinde spoke to Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy soon after the incident and Home Minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy was reviewing the situation along with senior officials.
