Swayamvar is a process by which the lady selects the person she wishes to marry. There can be many different ways leading to a woman selecting a man. The most well known or publicised ones are the marriage of Ram to Sita described in the Ramayana and Arujuna to Draupadi described in the Mahabharata.Ram journeyed from Ayodhya (in Uttar Pradesh) to Jankapur (near Darbhanga in Bihar) where Sita the daughter of the King of Janakpur was holding a Swayamvar ceremony. This is a distance of about two hundred miles and Ramchandra had accomplished the journey on foot. Sita's father had invited eleigible Princes and Kings to come and display their valour in an open court. The object was to pick up a Bow and string it. One by one the Princes tried and failed. Then Ramchandra of Ayodhya, the eldest son of King Dasratha, picked up the Bow and snapped it in two. Sita was very impressed with his valour and placed the garland of flowers around his neck in the open court thereby completing her Swayamvar with Ram.
