Fatherhood is a special gift of god. Being a good father is a challenging responsibility. We all look up to our fathers innumerable times to seek advice. Fathers are those pillars of strength for us on which we can always rely on. Fathers are our guide, friend and philosopher. Fathers are the role model to follow in life. History of Father’s Day
According to the available evidences, the first Father’s Day celebration was held in Washington on 19th of Jun, 1910. This celebration was suggested by Sonara Smart Dodd who was also known as Mrs. John B.Dodd. The idea behind this celebration was of showing respect to her father who brought up his six children. Mrs. Dodd’s mother died while childbirth and her father worked hard for all of them. Mrs. Dodd’s efforts were acknowledged in 1924 when President Calvin Coolidge stand by her and expressed the necessity of Father’s Day to show our love and respect for the person who faced hardships for our sake.
In 1966, a proclamation regarding the celebration of Father’s Day was signed by President Lyndon Johnson. The proclamation declared the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day in the United States of America. This proclamation was short-lived and was withdrawn after a year. In 1972, another Presidential Proclamation signed by President Nixon, established Father’s Day as a national event.
Father’s Day Celebrations in the Whole World
At present, Father’s Day is observed throughout the world. The emotions behind these observations are same everywhere but the date varies in different countries. In a number of countries like India, Canada, the United States, Japan, United Kingdom and a lot more, Father’s Day is observed on the third Sunday of June. On the other hand, a number of countries like Italy, Spain, and Portugal celebrate Father’s Day on 19th March. In Russia, Father’s Day is known as “Defender of the Fatherland Day” and is observed on 23rd February. In Bulgaria, December 26th is marked as Father’s Day.
