At least four sitting MPs from the C o n g re s s are feeling the heat, thanks to junior HRD minister in the Union cabinet Daggubati Purandareswari. With Bapatla Lok Sabha seat being represented by Purandareswari reserved for SCs, the Union minister has set her eyes on the neighbouring constituencies making the MPs feel restless.
Initially, Purandareswari was the first choice for Ongole parliamentary constituency in her native Prakasam district. With local legislators, including a close relative of the CM Balineni Srinivasa Reddy, favouring Purandareswari’s candidature from Ongole, the sitting MP Srinivasula Reddy seemed to have lost some ground to his opponent.
However, the two-time MP, Srinivasula Reddy has decided to fight his case till the last and even reported to have threatened the party satraps that he would jump the fence. A liquor baron, Srinivasula Reddy has good equation at the top level and the party high command might not be in a position to replace this key funding agent, sources say.
In that case, Purandareswari might be asked to contest from Narasaraopet in Guntur. The sitting MP from this constituency, Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy is willing to vacate the seat, provided he is given the Nellore general seat. A leading road contractor, Rajamohan Reddy is considered to be close to YSR and not ready to quit politics for the sake of Purandareswari.
Curiously, CM’s close follower and Tenali MP V Balasoury is moving heaven and earth to get the party nod to contest from Narasaraopet. In this background, Balasoury’s group is proposing Purandareswari’s name from Guntur LS seat. On the other hand, the sitting MP from Guntur, Rayapati Sambasiva Rao is equally powerful and claims the support of none other than Sonia Gandhi.
The Rayapati group believes that Balasoury’s entry into Narasaraopet politics has disturbed equations in all the constituencies. The Congress leaders, including local minister Kasu Krishna Reddy, share the same opinion.
