Muslim MPs’ Performance In Lok Sabha

There are many ways of measuring performance of elected representatives. One way is to look at their activities in the legislatures. While it does not give a complete picture of all the duties, their activities inside the parliament provide useful insights into how seriously they take their jobs. An analysis of the 36 Muslim MPs shows that most of them approached their legislative duties with seriousness.

Union Minister A.R. Antulay and CPI (M) leader Abu Aye Mondal where the most punctual with 95% attendance records. The lowest attendance record according to available data was of Ateeq Ahmed (SP) of Phulpur at 20%. The average for all Muslim MPs was 68%.

When it came to questions asked in the house, the Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen MP Asaduddin Owaisi scored the most with a record 1004 questions. He also happens to be among the top ten in questions asked category in the full house. He was followed closely by Congress’ Iqbal Ahmed Saradgi with 960 questions. Abu Hasem Khan, Akbar Ahmad Dumpy (elected to house in 2008), Saleem Iqbal Shervani, Omar Abdullah, and Afzal Ansari did not ask any questions. The average number of questions asked by Muslim MPs stands at 156.93.

When it came to participation in debates the most prolific record belongs to Ilyas Azmi (79) followed by J.M. Aaron Rashid and Hannan Mollah at sixty six times each. Six Muslim MPs did not participate in any debate. The overall average for all Muslims was 20.84.

The most number of private members bills were introduced by Iqbal Ahmed Saradgi (8) followed by A.P. Abdullahkutty (6), Hannan Mollah (2), and Shahnawaz Hussain (1). All other Muslim MPs did not get a chance to introduce any private bills.
