In tough economic times, can people afford to entertain themselves? This is the question the entertainment industry is asking itself as museums, musicians, publishing houses and movie studios prepare for the next 12 months.
The new year is scheduled to see its share of major releases, from John Grisham’s legal thriller The Associate to director Zack Snyder’s Watchmen, a movie that’s embroiled in its own legal thriller as two studios battle over who has the rights to distribute it. New albums are on the way from U2, Bruce Springsteen and rapper Dr Dre.
Some video game makers, film-makers and publishing houses hope to lure customers with a twist on sequels—origin stories about the beginnings of characters and stories we thought we knew. There’s the coming Star Trek movie about when Kirk met Spock; X-Men Origins: Wolverine, starring Hugh Jackman, which depicts the rise of the mutant superhero; and the video game Halo 3: ODST, which serves as a prequel to the hit, Halo 3.
Others are investing in the future. In May, the Art Institute of Chicago will unveil its $280 million (around Rs1,400 crore) modern wing, designed by award-winning Italian architect Renzo Piano. We present a preview of some of the most anticipated releases and events of the 2009 cultural calendar.
