SHOOTOUT AT SANTOSHNAGAR

By Ramakanth Reddy

Lawlessness Prevails And Fear Grips The City After Shooting Incident Even As Citizens Wonder Why DJS Isn’t Banned Yet

Chaos and confusion reign supreme
As the news of a terror attack at IS Sadan spread around the city, activists of BJP and Bajrang Dal reached the spot and staged protests.

Police had to resort to mild lathi charge several times to control the mob at the busy junction.

Following the shooting incident, all the shop keepers around IS Sadan pulled down their shutters but the firing spot was thronged by local people who were keen to know what exactly happened. “How many people died?” a curious school student asked.

The sensitivity was such that within two hours of the incident, the area bore a chaotic look with drunken agitators shouting ‘patriotic’ slogans, with curious bystanders adding to the traffic jam and the police making feeble attempts at controlling the mob. The sight was one of sheer lawlessness with people, at one moment, flocking around the PCO booth to take a look and click pictures of the bullet marks and at another running helter-skelter to save themselves from the police lathis. BJP and Bajrang Dal activists staged a protest at the IS Sadan X Roads and shouted slogans against the ISI and religious terrorism. Traffic moved at a snail’s pace due to the protests.

At around 6 pm, Bajrang Dal activists, burnt an effigy of the ISI and a green flag at IS Sadan X Roads and the whole traffic came to a halt for many kilometres on the IS Sadan to Midhani, IS Sadan to Karmanghat and Nalgonda X Roads stretches. “Stay united and save the country from the ISI and terrorists,” shouted the protesters. Some visibly drunk protesters chanted slogans like “Deheshat mitao” and “sarkar hatao” and burnt readymade effigies with ISI labels, and made sure that all cameras were trained on them as against the actual place of action.

Though busy shooing away people from the crime scene, the cops did not seem to mind these demonstrations that did nothing more than adding to the confusion and holding up the traffic.

After burning the effigy, the activists took out a rally carrying the Indian Flag. In response to the protests from Bajrang Dal, another group, mostly comprising local youth of another community took out a rally at IS Sadan X Roads raising religious slogans.

Interestingly, with most of the force deployed there appearing as clueless about the episode as the numerous onlookers, several versions of the firing incident kept doing the rounds. The bystanders too did not want to miss out on earning their five minutes of fame as they hovered around mediapersons trying to chip in with ‘expert comments’.

One bystander said that the media should question the government’s laxity in providing more security in an area especially as it housed three vital defence establishments. City commissioner of police, B Prasada Rao, DCP South Zone, Atul Singh and DCP Task Force, ASC Wesley visited the spot. Local police too did not arrest any protesters.

Commuters suffered the most for nearly six hours due to the protests and finally at about 8.30 pm traffic started moving at a decent pace.
