Rumours suggest Qualcomm will no longer be Apple's main chip supplier as Intel receives contract.
It's a big win for Intel, as Apple has decided to ditch Qualcomm in favour for Intel, according to reports.
Apple's upcoming iPhone will use modems chips from Intel, replacing Qualcomm's version which have been embedded in the latest smartphone. The AT&T variant in the US will feature an Intel chip instead of the customary Qualcomm solution.
According to Bloomberg, iPhones on the Verizon communications network will continue with parts of Qualcomm, furthermore iPhones sold in China will also work on Qualcomm chips.
Despite Qualcomm losing some of its Apple orders, it will still retain a large part of it. In fact, Intel's involvement has been rumoured for a while as Qualcomm's CEO Steve Mollenkopf revealed in April that one of its ‘major customers' would be pursing another supplier for some of its chips. This move signifies a major win for Intel, which has previously struggled to make its mark in the mobile industry.
Looking back, the first iPhone used chips from Infineon, which Intel acquired in 2010, but Qualcomm has been Apple's leading supplier of wireless chips.
All companies have not confirmed this move.
