SEO Specialist: Making Digital Money On Internet

By Sanjay Kapoor / Hyderabad

Remember that popular video “What most schools don’t teach?”  produced by CodeOrg about how the field of coding is left unmentioned in 9 out of 10 schools?

While the video featuring folks from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg to musician will.i.am makes the case that coding is an essential skill you should master before graduating high school, looking at the number of zeroes a social media job can add to your pay check, one wonders why today’s IIM’s don’t have  specialised courses on digital marketing.
According to industry body IAMAI, the digital media market was  worth Rs 3,500 crore by the end of 2012. Even a survey by Ernst & Young this year showed that 95.7% of  social media-savvy organizations in India ( those surveyed) use social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter , Pinterest, Google Plus, and Foursquare to build communities and advocate usage while 76.1% use social media as a platform to highlight brand news. Around 16% of organizations, which use social media for both the above reasons, also use it for customer service, lead generation, and research indicating high social maturity and moving toward getting business meanings out of engagements.

They survey also found that Facebook is the most important platform for marketers in India for engaging customers, followed by Twitter, YouTube and blogging but  multimedia options such as videos and webcasts are yet to get momentum with Indian marketers. Most organisations only spend  1%–5% of their marketing budget on social media. But even while budget allocations may be small, the pay is certainly not.

According to a report in the Economic Times , search engine optimisation is the most sought after profession for an experienced professional. A person with 15 years owork experience is paid anything between Rs 60 lakh to Rs 1 crore!  And if you are a fresher straight out of  B-school, worry not! The starting salary for digital campaign managers and social business analytics is anything between Rs 12-20 lakh.
