This Ad Breaks, The Notion Of How ‘Male’ And ‘Female’ Are Supposed To Look

By DEVIKA ASTHANA | INNLIVE

Is the new Jabong ad the revolutionary concept we need for gender equality?

In a world where young girls are starving themselves to fit into the “ideal” body type, and boys are committing suicide for being called “faggot” because they don’t match up to the ‘rules’ of masculinity, the latest advertisement by jabong.com, an online fashion brand, was maybe just what we required to break the binary construct of gender to achieve equality.

The Huge Problem With Genetically Modified Cotton That’s Ruining India’s Agriculture

By M H AHSSAN | INNLIVE

In the last 20 years, nearly 300,000 farmers have ended their lives by ingesting pesticides or by hanging themselves. Although successive governments have tried to help farmers by implementation of various schemes, there is no change on the ground. What is the reason behind such an alarming rise in number of suicides?

India has now shifted from natural cotton seeds to BT Cotton. The firm Monsanto has claimed that crop yields will improve and the dependence on chemicals and high irrigation will decrease. It has now been found that the claims were not true and farmers have to resort to buying more pesticides to spray in the fields. Ironically, the chemicals used like pesticides and insecticides, are provided by the sister companies of Monsanto.

Feature: The Strong Women Who Define The 'World's Best'

By SWARNAM JOHN | INNLIVE

The above quote summarizes the essence of a modern day woman. Kristen Dalton Wolfe writes in Inspiration about the qualities of a modern day lady. A modern day woman is gracious, steadfast, a leader, promotes moral excellence, is honest, is self-aware and she thinks before she speaks.

A modern day woman is the best version of herself, draws boundaries, is temperate, hospitable, uses her words wisely and represents herself with class and dignity on social media.

Weekend Special: What 'Being Left-Handed' Makes Your 'Personality' More Impressive Or Shabby?

By SARAH WILLIAMS | INNLIVE

There’s no denying it. Left-handers are the odd ones out. Sure, lefties make up about 10 percent of the population -- but, frankly, it seems like society has forgotten about them. Just consider all of the right-handed gadgets, awkwardly designed desks, and cooking tools that fit comfortably only in your right hand.

What causes someone to become a southpaw? Scientists aren’t exactly sure, but research points to a complex collaboration between genes and environment.

What Does 'Uber' Rise Mean For Public Transport in India?

How government priority is influenced by a class that aspires to physically separate itself from the greater public. There was a time in India, not too long ago, when travelling by a car meant one of two things— you were either in a private car or in a taxi. Now, app-based car services for instant hire have become extremely popular amongst certain sections in India's metro cities.

Companies like Uber and Ola have been doing extremely good business in India, seeing a rapid spike in their name recognition. The business has been so good that Uber claims Kolkata is its fastest growing market after the US and has better growth than London. After Kolkata, Mumbai is its second fastest growing market and other Indian cities aren’t far behind.

How Indian Designers Reviving The Handloom Sector?

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi lands in Chennai to be part of the National Handloom Day celebrations, there arises the pertinent question as to how designers and boutiques across India can help the handloom sector.

Many globally renowned designers in south India, like Gaurang Shah, Vivek Karunakaran and Shravan Kumar Ramaswamy whose clients include a long list of Indian celebs, have been consistently working with weavers and handlooms. Applauding the creation of a National Handloom Day to throw the limelight on a dying craft, Hyderbad-based designer and textile revivalist Gaurang Shah says, “It’s motivational and the most satisfying moment for a designer like me as the Prime Minister dedicates this day for handlooms.

After Two Years Of Sexual Harassement At The NGO I Worked For, An Apology E-mail Is All I Got As A Reward!

SHOCKING STORY OF A GIRL: In 2009, I joined as a volunteer for a well-respected environmental NGO, bright-eyed, idealistic, and ready for change. But in 2012, two years after I joined as an employee, my view of this place was completely and utterly undone, when an older male employee repeatedly sexually harassed me, and the senior management didn’t even blink.

One night at a hotel, on a work trip in October 2012, the man in question was drunk when he made an official call to me at around 10-11pm, telling me to vacate my room and insisting I sleep in his. He approached me physically despite my obvious discomfort, followed me around, insisted on force feeding me my birthday cake and sat next to me at breakfast when there were multiple other seats empty. At times, two of my male colleagues had to physically place themselves between the two of us to stop him from coming on to me.

By Newscop

FACE-TO-FACE: Shailesh Rao, vice president of Asia Pacific, the Americas and emerging markets for Twitter, sees himself as an educator and an evangelist. He did not know how much he would fit into this role until he arrived in India in 2007 as Google’s head for that country and discovered lack of understanding about the Internet. According to eMarketer, India is set to become Twitter’s largest market after the U.S. with a projected 40 million users by 2018, up from 17 million this year.

Twitter, says Rao, is powerful. It is a platform that enables a specific kind of communication and exchange, which is real time, public and conversational. Everybody on the planet is able to get value and use Twitter, he adds.

Expert Doctors With Disability: Surgical Jobs Still Denied

By Atif Alam
Group Feature Editor
HUMAN INTEREST: Though students with locomotor disability can study surgical disciplines, they're not considered for vacancies.

If the health ministry and the Medical Council of India (MCI) had had their way , Dr Suresh H Advani, the haemato-oncologist who performed the first successful bone marrow transplant in India, would never have become a doctor. Advani's legs were afflicted by polio and he uses a wheelchair. By the health ministry's classification, he would be certified as being more than 70% disabled and hence not fit to study medicine.

For decades, policy makers, mostly `nondisabled', have decided what persons with disabilities are capable of. That is why, a double amputee or even a mid-thigh amputee, who would be classified as having 85% or more of locomotor disability, would not be allowed to study medicine.

EComm Fuels Entrepreneurs To Turn Dreams Into Reality

INNLIVE Media Team
As she walked out of her college alumni meet brimming with nostalgic thoughts about her amazing years at B-School, she wondered how great it would be to have a simple keepsake to help her connect with this feeling forever. A t-shirt or a hoodie came to her mind. So she went to someone who created such apparel, but the poor quality on offer appalled her. The vendor didn't care about quality since promotional material is usually about meeting a low cost target.

But this lady was made of stronger stuff. She decided that if high quality products for such purposes weren't available, she would become an entrepreneur, build a team and create such apparel. Extensive research and much hard work later, Campus Sutra was born.

India's Emergency Response System Needs Urgent Fixing

I was riding with Gowtham on his Yamaha FEZ motorcycle from West Mambalam, Chennai to Kovalam further down the coast to meet our friend when we drove up to a little boy and an older woman in the middle of the road. There was blood. There was confusion. Nobody knew what to do or how to help.

I told Gowtham to stop. I ran to the boy, about 10 years old, who was spitting copious amounts of blood out of his mouth. He and his "Akka" (older sister in Tamil) were squatting in the middle of the road, terrified. The boy was screaming and spitting bloody murder.

Akbar Vs Rana Pratap: Why The History Communalising?

History has the habit of repeating itself, they say, albeit in a less glorious fashion. It seems that a statement recently made by our Home Minister has brought two iconic rulers back to a metaphorical battlefield.

Only last week, members of a right wing Hindutva organisation had attacked the legacy of Akbar, now seen as an exclusively Muslim leader, defacing road signs with Muslim names in New Delhi. What followed was a communalization of our history, a desperate attempt made by right wing organisations to divide and rule.

Unsolved: Why Mangoes Sent 'Mirza Ghalib' Into Raptures

Most passionate mango-eaters will dismiss other people's opinions on the subject, but the Urdu poet deserves to be taken seriously on the topic.

Most Indians I know are passionate about the mangoes they grew up eating and refuse to believe that there can be superior varieties out there. For the most part, I am no exception. You can keep your Alphonsos and Dasehris, as long as I can have my Himayat Pasands and Benishaans.
